Servicing a dual ball bearing Garrett GT CHRA

First of all you will need to take the 6 screws from the compressor and the 6 from the turbine housings and expose the old CHRA:

Notice how these GT's are different from the old T-series backplates, take a close look at the snap ring:

You wouldn't be able to tell it from the front, SC61 style:

Grab yourself a new CHRA, Garrett sells them all balanced and ready to pop in:

New CHRA out of the box:

Pop the Snap ring out so that you can use it in the new turbo, check out the ring and backplate here:

Put the backplate on top of the Compressor housing, gently drop the CHRA in there and apply the ring and you're ready to bolt on the housings:

Retail on any GT30R CHRA including the 3082 ( -14) is more than $1000, be friendly to whoever you bought the turbo from and he might just give you a break on the new CHRA.

In the end you have yourself a unit that's ready to go at it.

    Hope you enjoyed.
    Paul

Seems odd that you didn't mention the CHRA exchange program.

That's not always available, the one you just saw for example wasn't put through it because the wheel touched the housing and most dealers don't care much to help you if you fry a GT.

The procedure was just to show how it was done.

Yes dealers tend to be very unfriendly, when it comes to blown GT CHRAs.

    - The line -- "Well I could get you a whole new turbo for $xxxxx.xx" always seems to come up.

The price of a new turbo and a CHRA at retail is not far off...
