So my front ashtray trim piece is all scratched up and I have the replacement for it. I have looked at the DIY but still can't get the piece out. Has anyone removed that can send some help my way?

    Re: Help!!!

    THE FRONT ASHTRAY
The piece of trim on the ashtray fits onto a piece of similar size. removing this takes a little brut force and faith. On the bottom of the trim piece there are 3 little plastic pieces, these pieces fit into and lock into the female version on the piece attached to the ashtray. The front overhang fits over little thin teeth. Do not wiggle it or push it, pull straight out

In other words. Your piece that is scratched up slides over the plastic lid for the ashtray. With some force it slides off

    Re: Help!!!

This is how to remove the ashtray, i think it's easier to take the trim of when the ashtray is out in the open.

    Removing:

1: Pull radio approx. 10 mm out of the radio slot.

2:Remove air conditioning system operating and display unit.

    3:Open ashtray (front).

4:Take insert out of ashtray (front).

5:On vehicles with manual gearbox: Prise out gearshift cover upwards and detach gear lever boot.

6:On vehicles with automatic gearbox: Prise out gearshift cover upwards.

7: Unscrew bolts -2- on ashtray.

    8: Lift out ashtray (front).

    9: Unplug electrical connector.

10: Disengage trim -3- from ashtray.

11: Unclip storage compartment trim -4-.

    Installing:

    1: Install in reverse order.
Mod list = To long to write.

    Re: Help!!!

hope this helps...hard to describe but wiggle (pull toward you, while in up position)...til they come loose and then lift directly up.

    Re: Help!!!

    just for future reference:

you push the tray to open, once you open you hold it in the middle and you start to pull up/forward. I also noticed you could put a small screwdriver and pop it out, but you can easily use your hands to pull the cover trim.

for reverse install, you push all the way in and down and at the end. Make sure the trim is on tight and not loose, else you will not be able to close or open the ashtray easy. I learned the hard way.

    Re: Help!!!

I got the ashtray piece from vag-parts. I also got the driver door trim as well from them. Although they are across the ocean the parts and customer service are great!

    Re: Help!!!

So, I just bought an A4, and this ashtray door only opens halfway. Do I really have to remove the radio and HVAC controls to get the coin or whatever is back there out? I'd really like to use the ashtray spot for a future ipod mount..

    Thanks!
