    EGT Gauges?

Does noone care about EGT? I've been searching the forums and it doesn't seem like anyone has EGT gauges.

I used to be big into the diesel stuff and EGT was just as important (if not more) as boost and rail pressure.

Is it less important with a gasoline powered engine? Whats the deal?

    Re: EGT Gauges?

If your A/Fs and timing are good, EGT's are what they are. On diesels you really don't have A/F so you go by EGT.

    Re: EGT Gauges?

There are a few of us running EGT gauges, problem is that most people dont do it because they aren't willing to drill a hole in their exhaust manifold to install it in the correct spot.

In the manifold, can go in one of the runners or the collector.

They can go in the downpipe too but you get more acurate readings if they are in the manifold. Problem is if its in the manifold and breaks, then you have parts flying through your turbo and thats going to make one hell of a mess.

Why does everyone think an EGT gauge is going to break when we run less then 1600 deg temps and the probes are made to handle well over 2400 degs. Please feel free to show us 1 A4 1.8t owner that has had a name brand probe break.

I have been running the same EGT probe for 8 years and with 5 different turbos(K03, T28, K04, S300 and GT35r).

    Re: EGT Gauges?

    I have one

Mines tapped into the testpipe right after the turbo. The EGT from that position should be fairly accurate most people tap it in the downpipe cause the cat's heatshield gets in the way. That or the exhaust mani.

Shit happends. And like I said, I was big into the diesel stuff - they can run extremely hight EGT's when towing, especially up hills. You don't have to cry about it, it's not a big deal at all.

    Re: EGT Gauges?

Plus, since your EGT's don't get over 1600 F, does it even matter where you have your probe (before or after the turbo)? How much could it possibly change? Either way if your running 2000 degrees before the turbo and 1900 after, they are still too high - your probe did its job - the temps are too high -mission accomplished.

I don't see anything wrong with logging to set your boost levels, then leaving it until the weather changes drastically before you have to adjust boost levels again.

Anyway the stock primary o2 sensor is also an EGT sensor.

The turbo can effect the readings either way and give you false readings. It could be 300 less then your real EGT's at some points or even higher at others. Believe me I have had it in both spots, the correct spot is in the actual manifold.

BTW who is crying about it? I am just giving you info, if you want to do shit half ass then thats your choice.

False readings? It's an Audi not a Kenworth. I can see putting the probe in the manifold if you have an aftermarket turbo. But for a stock turbo, there is no reason for EGT's to be anything but normal. The point of the gauge in the first place is for piece of mind. If it reads 1200 all the time and one day for some reason it's reading 1500 cruising around town you now know there is a problem. Mission Accomplished
