    getting pulled over for HID's

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Im looking at the DDM tuning 55watt 6000K set up but i heard somewhere that they were 'illegal' and that only the 35watt setup was legal. Im not worried about melting anything cause i think we all cleared that up but i was wondering if anyone got pulled over for having the 55watt?

someone mentioned when i was searching that he gets people flashing their brights at him at least twice a night and i really just dont want a reason for a police to pull me over.

also... does anyone have the 35watt and wished they went with the 55watt?

and does anyone have 4500K and wish they went with the 6000K? or vice versa?

thanks, btw i have the one piece headlights with the projectors so its safe for me to do it. no worries there...

also maybe a naive question but how much of a change is there between a 35 and 55?? is like always driving with your brights on with the 55? haha

Go with 4300k! I'm not a fan of anything 6000k or over, and you lose lumens the higher color temperature you go.

i allmost killed this woman once.
i was in an intersection turning left, in the left turn lane. a lady was infront of me in the opposite left hand turn lane. she couldnt see a THING she was so blinded, she was flashing her highbeams at me and i could see she was cussing and swearing at me. so i flashed my reg highbeam back at her lol, just to show that they were my reg low beams. !!!!! then she just went for it and almost got fking smoked by a mini van. the van slammed on the brakes and just... just... just missed her.
i think my heart stopped for a moment. but then it kicked in again as i boosted up

My DDM 55w 10,000k bulbs in my M3 bother some people, but I don't have auto leveling and they tend to find their way into sideview mirrors..

Never been pulled over, and I only get brighted for them maybe once a month. And when I bright them back they probably feel stupid for thinking I had my brights on.

As far as legal issues go, you really need to check you local laws.
I know that in my area, in order to run HID's you MUST have projector lenses, and IIRC auto-leveling lights.
You are only allowed to use 35W HID's and they're not supposed to be any color other than "white" or a fog yellow/amber.

Some areas will not allow HID's unless they were factory optioned in that year vehicle. Us prefacelift guys (in theory) can't get away with it.

I have my OEM housings (non-projectors) and a 35W 8K setup. I haven't been pulled over for it, and I only get flashed once in a great while for them.

If you're facelift your set though... The Hids work great with the projectors.

our cars come with HID's as an option. So any cop that pulls you over is a dumbass. If you have over 6k then you deserve to be pulled over. Also, if you have 2pc lights and don't have projectors you deserve to be pulled over. Nothing is worse than running HID's without the proper housing

The E36 M3 didn't come with HIDs but most cops see its a BMW and assume they did. I used to get pulled over about once a week in my m3 before I started daily driving the A4. I had proper ZKW housings and european retrofitted auto levelers though..

Still have a clean driving record though.

Re: getting pulled over for HID's

I have had the original Protocold RS6 hid kit for 4 or 5 years. It is a 35w 4300k set with all OEM components and was great. I now have S4 housings with S4 guts, leveling motors, and manual level switch. The plan is to wire the S4 ballasts to the highs and install a 55w 4300k system for the lows. Maybe a 35w 3000k system in the Hella FF75 fogs.

Re: getting pulled over for HID's

when you flick your High beams both your high beam and fog hid ballasts will be forced to turn on/off very quickly (VERY BAD).

Unless you can bypass that. Id be interseted in that DIY for the a4. I have done that mod in my bmw so I can have all 6 sets of HIds on at the same time. Anyone ready to go rally?

Re: getting pulled over for HID's

The high beam flick is only high beams. The lows are either on or off and are completely independent. So are the fogs. I've flipped my lows on and off to get people to turn their lights on. I've heard the arguments but it didn't hurt anything on my otherwise fragile ride.

If I were to flash someone it would be long enough to fully ignite the bulb. With the leveling control I don't get flashed often and am usually tolerant of those too oblivious to realize their brights are on or too lazy to aim the lows properly. If they need a little shot of sunshine to realign their perspective then the ability to deliver it will be on hand.

Re: getting pulled over for HID's

What I am saying is if you have HIDs in your fogs and you drive with your fogs on all the time (I do) when you flick your high beams your fogs will turn off/on very rapidly when your highs turn on/off very rapidly.

Your high beams wouldn't even be visible for the 1-2 second flick since the ballasts would be warming up.

Using headlamps to knowingly blind oncoming driver's is totally unacceptable.

As for the Ziner who blinded a lady with his beams, not cool.
She could have been in a nasty smash, and gotten killed, killed someone, or at the very least, been badly hurt.

    Not good.

LOL, my 10,000k lights are NOT rice colored. They are white with a hint of blue. The ones that are actually a color are the 20-35,000K bulbs. Those are worthless.

Those bulbs are easily accessible. Some car manufacturers use them in their cars to attract people "to the future". Concept cards use some level of insanely high kelvin bulbs to make them look futuristic. Or at the very least, modern.

You can get 18,000k on DDM if you so wish.

I bought 10,000k bulbs to try them out, they were extremely cheap and I always wondered if they were useful. They are just as good as my 6,000K bulbs. They look the same.

If you get flashed by others on a regular basis, it's because you're blinding people. People get seriously hurt or killed because of shit like this. I don't get blinded often, thankfully, but I was blinded by some dick head who couldn't properly level his headlights, which caused me to pull over just because I couldn't see the road until they passed. I could have easily drove head on into him on the small curvy road we were on. Fuck that guy and anyone content with being that guy.

Most Audi enthusiast know that the prefacelift cars for the US were not optioned with HID's.

That being said, no, an officer will probably not know, but it's a risk you have to take.

LOL! You guys think your hi-beams are going to offend people? I have on the way, 2 pairs of 100W EACH off-road driving lights, ONE pair will be aimed at oncoming traffic and the other pair just straight forward... Also going to put another pair on my bumper... (This in on my Durango BTW)

Re: getting pulled over for HID's

This thread is just strange. If peopleflash you because of your low beams, it is more than likely due to the fact that you did not level them correctly. I have 55w 5000k in my headlights and have not been flashed once nor harrased by an authority figure once. I even passed inspection a couple of days ago with the guy doing the inspection looking into my engine bay, and I am sure he noticed the extra wiring that was needed for the ballasts. Not to mention the ballasts themselves. Or even the fact that for him to check the headlights for function, the engine has to be turned on.

It is very important to level your beam pattern pproperly when installing your HID kit. It is a hazard to other people on the road if proper precautions are not taken. What I did was find a building to first make the beams level with each others. Then went for a drive and kept adjusting the hieght of them until the beam was maybe 1" below the top of the trunk of the average sedan. Yes, I was blinding people doing test runs to get the height correct. But it was needed. Now, I drive knowing that my HID is not blinding to any in thier rear view mirror, nor to any oncoming traffic. I have not been flashed nor harrased by an authority figure yet. Jut take the proper precautions when installing that should be safe to you and other drivers you share the road with.
I hate it when my car acts like a little bitch, treating me like a bitch

No shit the pre-facelift B5's didn't come with that option. But if I see a fucking Honda with blue headlights I know that shit is aftermarket and illegal. If I see an audi with HID's I'm not going to question if it's aftermarket or not. As long as you've upgraded your headlights to Ecodes or 99.5+ headlights.

******s drive around here with yellow headlights thinking they are cool and dumb shits in big trucks put HID kits in their halogen housings and blind every person on the road. It gets real annoying that cops just let that shit slide.

That's because they're blinded. Level your headlights correctly before you or someone else gets seriously hurt.
