    supercharged 1.8t

    Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    okay first off, this may be a completely stupid question.....i was wondering if anyone knows if its possible to supercharge a 1.8t.....i'm not talking about taking off the turbo, but instead keeping it and adding a supercharger.

    ps. i searched for this on google, audizine and other locations but could not find anything about it that kept the turbo on.

    thanks in advance

    not quite...i have heard of these turbonators before, but it does make me wonder what it'd do for a turbocharged car :D....probably nothing bc the point of them is to atomize the air and a turbo already does it. maybe it would help with boosting faster..... i was thinking along the lines of centrifugal(sp?) supercharger?

    you mean twincharging right? a turbo and supercharger combo. IDK of any Audis like that, but I read in a past issue of Euro Tuner of a BMW 325i with a centrifigal supercharger from an Isuzu truck and a GT30 turbo. Only put out about 400 hp. But it was very mild tune I believe.

    yes twincharging. thats interesting, even with only 400 hp wouldnt it still be pretty quick bc its got 2 "turbo chargers" on it?

    Re: supercharged 1.8t

    You're referring to "Compound Charging."

    Very possible, some manufacturers dabbled with compound charging, one that comes to mind is Lancia.

    The idea was to make a small capacity engine feel like a "larger" one - the supercharger took care of bottom-end power, while the turbocharger took care of top end.

    The switchover was seamless, so it gave a very smooth power delivery.
    Besides the obvious mounting issues, the hardest thing to get right is the "phasing", in terms of software that controls the lot.

    Generally, both are not boosting at the same time, so the switchover needs to be very carefully monitored / controlled, so the graph shows no dips - i.e, there's no "gap" where the supercharger boost pressure drops off, and the turbocharger boost takes over.

    A lot more complicated than even fitting twin turbos to an I4.

    it says you can only install these after the throttle body on turbo cars. umm that would mean inside the intake manifold? i would like to see how they do that.

    screw companies like this that off 100% satisfaction guarantees but in the fine print it says "15% restocking fee on all returns, buyer gets screwed on shipping both ways"... 60% of your money back is the same as 100% right? hey that doesnt matter, theres a chick in a bikini standing next to a nice car!

    Re: supercharged 1.8t

    FYI:

    Volkswagen Golf GT Specifications

    The CarAdvice team were at Mt Cotton driver training centre yesterday at the launch of the new Golf GT, so before we get our “first steer” article up and going, lets have a closer look at the technical details of the new Golf GT.
    <A class=imagelink title="2007 Volkswagen Golf GT" href="http://www.caradvice.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/2007volkswagengolfgtfront.jpg" target=_blank>
    The Volkswagen Golf GT is the first car in a production to employ a turbocharged & super charged FSI engine - the idea being that by super/turbo charging the engine, it will gain maximum power with minimum fuel consumption, but does the theory work?

    Yes! The compact 1.4 litre direct-injection engine develops 125 kW of power and has a maximum torque of 240 Nm in the range from 1750 to 4500 rpm thanks to the combination of an exhaust turbocharger with a mechanically driven supercharger. All of this power from a 1.4-liter engine? But at what cost?
    <A class=imagelink title="Golf GT Rear" href="http://www.caradvice.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/2007volkswagengolfgtrear.jpg" target=_blank>
    The 1.4-liter engine uses only 7.7 l /100 km for combined city and highway driving, not a bad feat for a 125kW engine!
    <A class=imagelink title="Golf GT Engine" href="http://www.caradvice.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/2007volkswagengolfgtengine2.jpg" target=_blank>

    The table below shows a comparison between the Golf GT twin-charged engine and the 2.0 FSI engine (both from VW)

    combined183 g/km*192 g/km** Manual gearbox You have to wonder though, with this many Volkswagen Golf variants flying around, how does one distinguish between them? Volkswagen have worked hard to differentiate all the different models, the new front section with its V-shaped radiator grille in the body colour is the exclusive preserve of the new Golf GT.
    Like the GTi, air inlet holes are integrated into the front bumper of the GT, but are more understated than in the GTI. There is an opening for the twin tailpipe in the rear apron. The GT is 15 millimetres lower than the standard level plus it also gets 17-inch wheels.
    <A class=imagelink title="Golf GT Dash" href="http://www.caradvice.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/2007volkswagengolfgtdash.jpg" target=_blank>
    If your wondering where all the power goes from the GT’s twin charged engine, and your thinking, is it DSG? Yes it is, there is a choice of six gears - manual or DSG. The car is driven through the front-wheels (same as the Golf GTi however the Golf R32 is AWD).

    Although in standard guise, the Golf GT comes in a manual, for those willing to pay a little bith more (and why wouldn’t you, the DSG is worth it) it will also be possible to combine this engine with the crisply shifting six-speed DSG transmission. Volkswagen are hoping to convince buyers to tick the DSG box, after all, this car was designed for DSG.

    Standard equipment on the Golf GT includes
    • electric windows,
    • electrically adjustable and heated outside mirrors,
    • central locking with radio remote control,
    • six airbags,
    • head restraints and threepoint seat belts for all five seats,
    • electromechanical power steering
    • ABS with Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP) and traction control (ASR).
    • 17-inch alloy wheels in the “Classixs” design with 225/45 R17 tyres.
    • The 16-inch brakes (as in the Golf GTI) combined with Brake Assist

    I know this has been done to a B5 before. I remember an article in Maxpower(pre-Eurotuner) back in like 2000 about a dude in Canada that did it. It was the issue that had the Beetle with the TT conversion done on the outside(BeeTTle). I know I have it somewhere, I'll try and find it.

    A concept I liked a lot better than "Twin-Charging" or Compound Charging" was the VCR (Variable Compression Ratio) Engine from SAAB. They were able to adjust compression ratio seamlessly. They managed to make a 1.5 liter inline 5 that made 225hp/225tq using a supercharger. Very nice technology, they just never produced the engine.

    Re: supercharged 1.8t

    That is the car he entered into the 1.8t Challenge. When I saw him at this years Eurotuner GP I asked if he still races that car and he said no.

    Here is a video of it at the 1.8t challenge

    BTW the reason no one has added a super charger to the 1.8t with a turbo on it still is because there is no room to put a SC if the turbo is still there. The SC would help with low end tq, but would then become a restriction for the turbo at high rpms. Plus I dont see why you would want to push hot air thru a SC and there wouldn't be enough space to put 2 coolers. Odd thing is that you never see a twin charged car making big hp or running fast times at the track. I bet those setups get some really shitty gas milage vs just a turbo.

    LOL, pretty sure that was a very experianced driver running that car at the 1.8t challenge. Fact is that car was out on the track twice during that event with 2 different drivers.

    Maybe the driving wasn't bad, just the fact that you need glasses.
