    Lightbulb Headlight LED Project

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi Guys,

If you surf on the A4 B7 Forum, You will see that I just finished a LED project that look like this:

I would like now to try on a B6 headlight. To do so, I am looking for a Donor who has a set of headlights lying around. I will pay for the shipping back and forth and the Donor will have the LED upgrade at discounted price. Of course, there is no certainty that I will be able to adapt the mod. If it's the case, I will return the headlight but they will still, be usable.

Please PM me if interested and if you have a set

    Re: Headlight LED Project

I do have two spare sets, one is e-code, other DOT, both have broken tabs on one unit (either left or right). I keep them for experiments like that. Wasn't similar mod done in A3 forum?

    Re: Headlight LED Project

haha they are that bright at night. Those pics were right after the install with a 12volt to make sure they worked before I wired them up I will try to get some pics tomorrow. I do completely agree that the shape of the b7 light is much nicer. But they are the same LEDs from the same source

    Re: Headlight LED Project

i think the led's need more space in between them so that they look more like the newer audi's headlights and you can see them individually better, instead of just looking like a solid beam of light across the bottom.

    Like the R8 headlights:

    Now that would be sick.

    Stay Tuned.
Me too. Canibalized two sets and have a dual side-by-side projector lens high/low (got rid of that huge high beam housing) ecode that will be overlayed carbon fiber interior instead of painted, and the LED pattern closely matching the B8 A4. The LED pattern that curves down around the projector and then sweeps back up to flow in to the line that is formed where the hood and fender meet (see pic in post below). Not like the S5, which goes straight across before curving up. Had folks in the B8 forums sending me pics for a while now so I can match it as closely as possible within the constraints of how the dual projectors sit.
Then I'm CF overlaying my splitter and grilles so the whole front end matches. If greg still sells them, I'm going to get the S4 exhaust surround in CF also to tie it all together.
Right now I'm toying with a moldable frosted lens cover over the LED strip like the B8 has so you don't really notice the individual LED bulbs when they are off.
The preliminary steps are completed and everything functions, and I'm just waiting for my CF 2X2 twill weave cloth to show up. Should have them done about mid-December. Mine also have a way to change the LED's if any burn out.

I don't care if anyone copies these ideas; if you've got the skills to pull it off, more power to ya.

The B8's are closer together. I'm trying to match the B8, not the R8 or S5. Like THIS:

    Re: Headlight LED Project

Excellent. Can't wait to see it.

Serviceability is definitely a huge concern. Leds can't just be shoved in headlight housing in hopes that they will stay lit long enough until one moves onto the next whip.
Also, another note about the frosted lens. I've been looking into that a great deal, and I can't seem to find anything remotely good looking to accomplish that. because if you just use regular old frosted glass spray paint, it's going to cut out light rather than enhance it, which OEM cheese grating frosted plastic does.

So here's are 2 suggestions that may help you jog some ideas or improve current ones.

    1. plastic is rather pliable at certain, or above rather, certain temperatures. I had the idea of taking a factory, any old factory "clear bumper lens" from the 90s, (yeah 80s and 90s that was the thing back then. Yeah I'm old, deal with it), they made a lot of these bumper lens covers.

I thought of using these for two reasons.
    1. they are very thin. That's exactly what I would want because space is very limited, and thin also means the plastic is easily pliable.
    2. The lens already has reflexive particles embedded in the material, and the grooves/gratings in the lens diffuse light nicely without sacrificing intensity .

Similar to something like that. It would have to be clear of course. or do they? Put it in the oven, or use a torch to heat, mold, heat, mold, heat, mold, etc. until you get the shape you want. Of course, for our applications, the little frosted reflectors/ "led projectors" would have to be more long than they would be fat. So some cutting would be involved.
Though #1 might be a longshot, these items already have the factory reflectors inside the frosted lens, so it will actually project and diffuse light making the light brighter and more visible. Whereas throwing a coat of frosted pain on clear plastic/glass will actually reduce the light output altogether. Ask me how I know.
If you want to look into #1, I used to sell a lot of these bumper lenses back in the day. I still have a small stockpile of them. Just let me know and I'll go dig it up for you.

#2 Okay, this may be taboo or "ghetto fabulous", but DEAL WITH IT. Anyway, back on point. Years ago when everybody was wondering how in the name of Gray Davis' ridiculous government benefits did BMW get those COOL demonoid seductive ANGEL EYES! Well Some people got tired of BMW loafers strutting about like they were made of some special cut of God's Cheese that nobody else could touch.
So, people got really creative in transforming everyday items at home into those very ANGEL EYES made to be retrofitted into almost any headlamp housing (size permitting).

    here is the DIY LINK

You could use an angel eye rod to made the reflector/projector for your led project.
    1. the rod is definitely thin/small enough to fit into the housing no problem
    2. it is uniform in shape, so it' might turn out looking better than idea #1.
    3. also very pliable
    4. I think best of all, you can fashion your own grooves in it to create a look most conducive to light dispersion and/or reflection for the LEDs. And since, you were looking at the B8 light, which during the daytime is blinding already, this rod might be just the thing. You can create the spacing as close or as far apart as you like, then chamfer the little slits in there in reference to the location of your LEDs.

But of course instead of molding into a circle, you would mold it into
    the contours of the headlamp.

Anyway, hope this gives you some ideas about your project. If you have questions, don't hesitate.

    More power to you.
