    I love our '02 A6 4.2

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
It is my wifes daily driver and it is too rare that I get to drive it, but today was one of those days. As you might expect it needed something and right you are it needed the state inspection, a car wash and a good interior cleaning!

As I got into it I noticed that the odometer was at 89952 and I thought damn nearly 90k. I turned the ignition and the V8 came to life with a quiet rumble, I backed out of the garage drove down the street then after a short while I turned out on a major highway and floored it and it did not take long before I was in the wreckless speed driving range so I decided to take it easy for the rest of the afternoon.. all worries about 90k were gone.

The thing about the A6 4.2 is how wonderful it drives and looks!

    Have a great Thanksgiving!

    Cheers!!

    Re: I love our '02 A6 4.2

I'm at 95K and it feels brand new. I have owned many VAG products over the years, and I NEVER have to think about this thing. The 4.2 might not be the most tuner friendly, but it's so reliable and hauls ass when it needs to. Amazing too is how my friends and girlfriend always want to take my car when we go somewhere.

4.2 love is a great thing.

i love the 4.2 in my s6 - people who dont know about the car are simply amazed when i floor it on an open road and leave cars in my dust. there was a dodge magnum the other day when i was driving on the 5 fwy in CA from SF to LA and he gave this "my hemi will kick your euro junk's ass"

lets jsut say i floored it when i saw his smug face and i know he wasnt expecting me to but after i got the jump he never caught up .... LOL

jsut another thing ... i hear PES-Tuning is coming out with their supercharger on the 4.2 with an expected release date some time around march 2009 .... yummy - im seriously considering this over my RS6 exterior conversion .... after going stage 3+ on my B6 A4, i wouldnt be surprised if i dumped that money in a supercharger ....

has anyone ever had a supercharger on their pervious cars with PES-Tuning??? im just curious regarding the reliability factor of it all ....

    Re: I love our '02 A6 4.2

From what I know....PES is pretty good stuff. I had a ride in a B5 A4 with the charger and it was very impressive. I have heard some pretty insane numbers rumored for the 4.2 kit. Not that I want to jack this thread, but I have two major concerns about it....1) Can the tranny really handle it? No matter what the power bump is. 2) Honestly this thing has "been coming out" for a long ass time. Lets see if it actually makes it here.

Hey what's up man...just becareful, that could mean death to your tranny. Remember this is your daily driving new baby hauler. I am getting the rear RS6 bumper conversion and SE exhaust in January, can't wait.

Take care....and I might be interested in your wheels if you still have them.

I had a g2 system for v6 2.8. after 15k miles had no problems. my consern is the trany also. i dont think it can handle the torque. They are testing it on the a6, a8, and toureg, all with automatic tranies so they are making it to suit those cars. Besides they coming out with 2 wersions intercooled and not both will be tuned to diferent psi and produse different hp.

awe already does it..mtm also has one....just a small price of 10000$$$..i would never do that unless your car is under like 40k miles..transmission can definitely handle it..i just know its not good to run things supercharged like that..its always gonna lead to a problem

My 4.2 (S6) is my wifes daily also, and yes; I think it is as fun to drive as my BMWs. It is simply a great car that slotted into my needs (something to haul two kids or two dogs; all-wheel drive for her, power for me). Like the OP stated, there is nothing like backing it out of the driveway to take it out on the road, and drive it the way it was meant to be driven.

That kit has been advertised on PES' webiste for 3+ years first to be offered in winter of 2005, I'll believe it when I see it. I doubt the transmission will hold up, unless it's been worked over.

... unless you factor torque, hosepower in the equation. Chip alone in a 2.7 pretty much causes the end of that reign. Then downpipes, upgraded clutch, and...oh, wait a minute, you don't use clutch, right?

Sorry to rain on the reign.

Why? because of the tranny? or the power?

The 4.2 really were not made to go fast FAST, but more a go fast REALLY nicely!

I'll still take my urS6 if I want a raw go fast big sedan!

I'm with you on "go fast, really nicely" as true for A6 altogether (not just 4.2 version) - cringe when I hear guys talking straight pipes, exhaust cut-outs, etc. I presume Frank's point was that supercharged 467 hp won't keep up with "stage 3" 2.7 b/c power with supercharger is not there until top rpm, vs turbo effects Much sooner. You'd need a might long straightaway on the salt flats before 4.2 ever caught up.

Looks like Audi engineers have come up with supercharger on new 3.0 with different power profile, though. Pretty interesting breakthrough it would seem.

    Re: I love our '02 A6 4.2

i just wouldn't waste the money, if you want a V8 with more power than the 4.2 or S6 i would just buy a used RS6 , plus like warren said, and thats what i was getting at, V8's have no quickness at all , and thats why the B6 and B7 S4's will never be anything like the B5 , i like the idea of a supercharger kit for the 4.2 , but cmon guys really , is 10-15K worth it? just buy a 2.7T and stg 3 it or like i said get a RS6 , even after the 4.2 is supercharged and you wasted all that money, it still wont match a RS6 and will never match a stg 3 2.7T , just my 2 cents , but i still love the 4.2 for an everyday driver with nice power.

there is one thing the 4.2 and the S6 has over us 2.7T guys, and thats nice wide fenders , but thats about it. - just my 2cents

the 4.2 is solid, unlike the 2.7tt. I love and have owned both motors but the 4.2 is definitly the more reliable.

"have owned both motors but the 4.2 is definitly the more reliable" -- I guess we are excluding transmissions? Though I admit there are hardly any reports of clutch problems on 4.2 , tranny sems to be weak item for 4.2 and timing belt is for 2.7.

I'll have to agree with FRANK on the wide body of the 4.2.... it's just so dam sexy!!!!! but other than that i guess i can't complain about my 2.7T...

well for the guys that aren't into tuning their ride.. i think the 4.2 is a great option.. i don't think i'll ever get pass stage 2 with my current ride, but it's always great to have that option!!!

guess we'll have to wait and see about that group buy with the RS6 bumper + clip... if it looks near what the sexy RS6 .. i won't have any complains at all....

also.. i LOVE the winter.. my car drives faster!!!

    Re: I love our '02 A6 4.2

If the 4.2 was offered in a 6 speed, I might have considered it. Since they don't the 2.7t was for me. I really wanted a manual car again. I have been driving trucks for 6 or 7 years and wanted something fun, and for me that is a manual. To each their own though. The 4.2, from what I know about it, is a great motor.

Yeah, I guess the RS6 option is a good one. That shit is beyond expensive though. Besides that, I've never been a fan of S/RS impersonating. Like when I had my B5 and everyone wanted to look like an S4. I just wish we had some body kit options for the 4.2/RS6 sedan.

I know what you mean. People will make fun of a person with a v6 mustang that put a GT badge on it, but debadge their A4 or 330 and get the side molding and rims and all to make it look like a S4 or M3, when we all know the real problem is why the hell would anybody buy a V6 mustang?
