motor mount and crank pulley ?'s

first, is there a history of crank pully probs?? i hear they are a 2 piece design. i just looked at mine while the car is running and it has quite the wobble to it... any ideas?? and second of all, i have a sound coming from what sounds like the drivers side of the engine compartment. it's a type of tapping sound that is only noticeable off idle and under light load... like pulling out of my driveway or starting from a stop. car still has all it's power and above 1200 rpm or so the sound goes away... could it be a motor mount crappin on me?? car is an 03 1.8tq 5spd. it does have an apr snub that has been in for over a year w/ no probs so i kinda ruled it out. i've tried to open the hood and watch the engine to see if it twists alot but i've never looked at the engine like that b4 so it could be twisting a little bit and i couldnt tell... any ideas?? anything i could try?? hate to have to take her to a dealer for somethin small...

Re: motor mount and crank pulley ?'s

I have not heard much about the crank pulley failing. That also doesn't mean it can't happen and/or has not happened.

Are you sure the tapping sound is on the driver side? Listen to the front of your car by the radiator and bumper. Noise louder??? I have a very similar sound that is only present at idle. Its gone off-idle. I thought it was the serpentine belt tensioner so I disconnected the serpentine belt and started the car. Noise went away. Right now I am concluding that the tensioner is bad. Going to replace that and see what the outcome is...

Re: motor mount and crank pulley ?'s

i thought about taking off the belt and trying it but when i looked at the pulley w/ the engine running, it's got a nasty wobble to it... i'm suprised the belt hasnt flown off the pulley already. so now i face the task of finding a new pulley. this is where life starts to suck... i never regret owning my audi til it needs work done to it.. i have a new clutch and flywheel that needs to be installed but i dont have the tools or the shop to do it in, and garages dont want to touch it unless it's an audi dealer.. then i have to find a pulley.. audi wants $190 for the stock pulley.. havin a hard time finding it cheaper than that.. i just assume get a power pulley kit for that price that has all the belt drive pulleys all together. i'm wondering if anyone on the classifieds here has a factory crank pulley that they took off and replaced w/ a lightweight one... maybe they'll let it go cheap..

Re: motor mount and crank pulley ?'s

I have a factory crank pulley off a TT 225HP but am unsure if it is the same as the AMB B6 A4. I'll look when I get home this weekend to see if it remotely resembles the B6 A4.

I know it is a long drive but if you feel like coming up to Hartford I can install your clutch for you.

the serpentine belt tensioner is just under $100 like I guessed. I need to order one.

hey doug, if you didn't confirm that tensioner as the culprit yet just jiggle it and see if there's excess play... most of the time when a tensioner of that style is clicking you can just reach down and replicate the sound by hand.

im sure that's something you already know... just figure it's worth saying (err.. typing) outloud

Re: motor mount and crank pulley ?'s

well i ordered a new crank pulley last nite.. total after shipping was $161.55... went for lightweight even tho i highly doubt it'll be enough "light weight" to make a dif, it was only $15 or so more than a stock pulley and it's one solid piece so i wont have to worry bout it again....
