According to the dealer, a "Check Engine" light shows a fault requiring cat replacement. Does it pay to seek alternatives to the stock (and very expensive) item? Thanks.

Can you get the code? It would help to determine whether the dealership is trying to get money out of you (by it being maybe just a sensor).
It would be worth your while to go to a (trusted) independent audi/vw shop.

If it's a cat efficiency code, it could be an O2 sensor out of spec.
