Is this the way Bi-Xenon's are supposed to look?

So I just ditched my bare bones 06 A4 for one with 20k fewer miles, s-line and pretty much every option sans Bose and Bluetooth (can anyone verify if this was even available on the 06?). Anyways, when I drove my baby home and parked it in front of the garage I noticed how un-aligned the Bi-xenons looked. I am not sure if this is on purpose, or if this is a defect. I wanted some opinions before I ran off to the stealership for repair. This is my first vehicle equipped with xenons so forgive me for being a noob!

    Thanks

im no expert but they do look misaligned. id suggest that you try to do it yourself but im not even sure that one of them is set to the proper setting so its better to go to the dealership. Your probably under warranty anyway so just go, thats what its there for lol

Definitely misaligned....there should never be that large of a difference.

I figured the were not aligned properly. I could understand a bit of a difference, but this just seems pretty ridiculous. Anyone with the auto-level xenon's care to comment!

I have auto level, mine are staggered as well, driver side is lower, but not as low as yours.

I believe there is a white adjustment knob near the head light than you can put a screwdriver to which could bring it up a little

there are three screws on the top of the headlight and one below that you can tinker with to align the headlight. But since you just bought the car I would just take it back to them and have them deal with the hassle

definitely off, on the second picture, the two bright spots from each head light should be together.

the cutoff pattern like that is:

One of the better links around for describing how the Xenon headlights should be aimed. I think however with Audi's you need to VAG-COM the Xenon Range Control module first in order to make adjustments. if you don't the auto level mechanism will override any changes you are trying to make.

its not so hard...beam should be like this ________/______/-------

and NO they do not "auto-level" the leveling system is to dip the beam during acceleration, and turn around corners, but thats all based on whatever the lights are aimed at already.

i wouls suggest raising the driver side to match the other side

Re: Is this the way Bi-Xenon's are supposed to look?

Update: So I was driving to Arizona last Wednesday and halfway into my trip, I got a dipped headlight error on the right side. I lost one of my HID's for about an hour. Then I remembered I had read that turning lights on and off will reset. Totally scary while on a highway, but I flipped the lights on and off real quick and light came back. I am starting to think that I should have this checked out by dealership. If it is a bad bulb, then obviously I will replace that myself, but there might be something else going on. I haven't even had this car for two weeks and all ready problems My previous 06 was flawless for almost three years. I guess with more tech=more problems.

Sounds like a you need a new bulb. My car used to give "dipped headlight" message for the right headlight all the time for about a month or two and once I replace the bulbs everything went back to normal and works perfect again. This seems to be a common problem for several
Bi-Xenon owners, you could either go back to the dealer and let them know so that maybe they can replace the bulbs for free since you just picked it up or you can source the bulbs out yourself and pay between $125~$250

I think that will be my plan of attack. Have them check it out, and if they say faulty bulb, excuse for me to purchase some 6k bulbs!

Re: Is this the way Bi-Xenon's are supposed to look?

btw... changing the xenon bulb is not that easy. since you have to remove two screws from the headlight housing, you will have to remove the housing first, which means removing the whole bumper :)

    take it to the dealer...

My headlights had the same problem as the OP and I used the adjusters to get them level. Now when I start up the car, the auto level looks totally messed. One beam travels down then up like normal, but the one I adjusted goes almost diagonally. Any ideas?

That might be why VCDS is needed. The Ross-Tech site talks about the sequence at http://wiki.ross-tech.com/index.php/...et_%288E/8H%29

xenon bulbs are only covered for 1 year or 12k miles. dealer wants 250 for bulb plus 2 hrs labor to remove bumper. i heard the bulb can be replaced without bumper removal if you have small hands.

there is a tsb for flickering d1s bulbs for ppl with xenons. i complained about it to the service dept, they told me there was a tsb, gave me a loaner for 2 days, picked up the car with a new bulb and ballast all under warranty

Re: Is this the way Bi-Xenon's are supposed to look?

So I took my ride in to the dealership Friday for a diagnosis, and they found that the housing on the passenger side was defective. They replaced the bulb and ordered a new housing that they will be installing this week when they receive it. I am pretty happy to have a solution with zero costs to me. As others had posted, I was under the impression that I would have to pay for a new bulb, but that was not the case. Thank's for all the input!
