My car is about to go out of it's 100k warranty.

How would someone know if the timing chain tensioners were going bad?

    I have a B6 S4.

Misfires and running really rough. Dealer wont replace them just for the early startup rattle.

Unless they are COMPLETELY gone I don't see how misfires would be a result of bad tensioners. The engine would have to jump time. You would have bigger worries if that were the case.

Loud valvetrain noise would be a good indication. Plastic pieces in the oil pan would be another.

Slack in the chain could definitely cause it to jump thus throwing off the timing thus causing a misfire. Im almost 100% positive that the chain is not open to the oil pan below. Plastic pieces from the guides would be unnoticeable in the oil.

I dont think their is a clear set indicator that your tensioners are going. We need someone to chime in here who has had to replace this part.
