    Trying to figure out wich IC to go with

    I am in the process of going stg 3 and am not sure what is better the smic or the fmic any input on this would be great.

    IMO fmic is better for drag racing, smic's better for road racing. And as far as I know the fmic is still way cheaper than the smic option

    depends on what you want to do. i just went with rs4 ones since i wanted to keep the stock look and have an oil cooler and W/M already, er's someday if i need the extra cooling.

    Here ya go... I recommend the AWE Coolers, I don't experience heat soak, but then again I'm not road racing or driving like a freak. These are great coolers for back to back runs and they fit PERFECTLY and were really the benchmark for other ICs to follow. If you plan on getting a methanol kit, these ICs will do a great job. Unless you really beat on your car or autocross, the ER's aren't 100% necessary, but again, if you have the money like everything else on the S4, why not.

    I recommend the IPP intercoolers with meth injection. You can save close to $500 going this rought and you will never get better cooling from anything else. No sense in spending $1400 on just ER intercoolers when you can find used IPP's for $500 and VAST meth injection for $360.

    I might be selling my IPP Large SMIC's. Not the small S4 upgrades, these are an upgrade to the RS4 ones and use that piping & coupler setup, which I would include. The regular IPP's were ok, but the larger ones I think are only second to the ER and maybe the AWE for a lot less $$.. They are pretty much flawless, so PM me if interested.
    01 A6 2.7T, blk/blk, 6MT, SSP Tuned!, 3,996 lbs w/ me, full weight, street tires, 29+lb wheels.
    Ran an 11.8 @ 119 at MIR - Sept 2008. FIRST A6 IN THE 11's!

    With meth and my IPP's I logged IAT's that were in the low 70's F at redline in August. Temps actually go down and are below ambient temps. I think temps were about 80*F when I went logging. IPP's and meth is also what I used to get my 4k lb pig into the 11s..

    Well, when you get older you will understand that when you have a business you have to have something called "profit", and you won't make a dumb statement like that.

    There is a cost for quality, R&D, and engineering. Hence the products we see from AWE and ER.

    I guess us "young guys with more common sense" will just make the wiser decision while you "older gentlemen" can pay extra for nothing. Everyone and their mom runs meth now so all you need is a reliable intercooler without plastic endtanks like the stockers and just squirt it with meth and call it a day.

    Yes, everyone and their mom runs meth now! My god, it is such a revelation. There is a handfull of people running meth compared to the number of S4's that are out there.

    Again, your statements obviously reflect your lack of experience. I am not saying meth is bad at all, but don't call us people that buy well designed and engineered products stupid. I have owned more Audi's then you have had girlfriends, and two things I have learned:

    1. Never follow what everyone else does
    2. Don't go the cheap route and sacrafice quality

    I would not say there is a lack of quality at all on the IPP's or many others for that matter. Most of them are still well made. The ER's are just huge, so as a result they cool more. The cores probably have a bit better flow, but I would not say that going with IPP's would 'sacrifice' quality like you say.. But in a case where cheaper means less quality I support your statement 110%...

    guess I might be the only young guy that COMPLETELY agrees. Even after everyone bashes keep in mind APR buys their SMIC's from who...... AWE hmm there might be a correlation there......

    Ahm thank you but I'd much rather buy AWE or ER SMICs because I know I will be getting a great quality product that will serve it's purpose. I don't like to cheaping out things like that.

    Never called you stupid...with all that experience you're talking about under your belt re read my post.

    With all that experience and knowledge from age it sucks that you have had more audi's than I had girlfriends.

    You say never follow what everyone else does yet you jump on the bandwagon on ER's. Don't get me wrong they are the best out there if you're not using meth. But most people are that want the best IAT, as it's so reliable and makes the car consistant run after run.

    IPP intercoolers are not cheaply made. They're a good quality product. It's like saying that GEN-X turbo kits are cheap since we are the least expensive yet we use the BEST materials.

    Keep in mind that IPP carrys TWO sets (IPP/S4 & IPP/RS4) of SMICs for the B5-S4s. If I am not mistaken, the picture you posted is the IPP/RS4 SMICs because the IPP/S4 SMICs should be a direct replacement with no cutting needed.

    There you go...do you actually manufacture turbos, IC, or anything else from scratch? No, so don't try to compare the pricing of a "kit" that you put together to something that SOMEONE actually Engineers, designs, puts on CAD, R&D's with someones car for 6 months ++ etc... Please engineer a set of IC's and then come back to us with a killer price. Please make sure to include your warranty, your product materials, Product Insurance in case something damages my car from your product, etc... You can't compare some items that you make in a garage to a real company's product that provides all the above.

    Your "kit" might be the best in the world for your "designed" application and use, however...what the hell you going to do when your "meth" runs out, or you just want to hop in the car for a nice run in the canyon...and oh shit, I can't because I ran out of "meth".

    Any application that requires a substance to be consistently refilled (other than fuel) is not what the MAJORITY of the population would call acceptable for daily driving.

    So your comment of "keep letting the companies think that overpricing their inter coolers is ok" is basically telling the OP that ER and AWE are "ripping" people off because they charge too much. And it's stupid comments like that from uneducated individuals like you that makes companies and SPONSORS (paying Sponsors I might add, unlike others) of this very Forum decide NOT to put any $$ towards giving us Quality Products at a price that is as competitive as they can make it.

    I know, I just want to point out that those are IPP/RS4 SMICs and not the IPP/S4 SMICs. Just to avoid possible confusions as not many people here know about IPP SMICs.
