Aftermarket Bose Front Door Speaker Replacement

Unfortunately both my front bose speakers blew out, and I had a hard time finding a replacement due to the 2 ohm bose amplifier. Fortunately I was able to find a 4" Infinity reference series speaker (Model 4022i). I picked them up from BestBuy for about $89.00.

    Install:

I was able to remove the bose speakers from the mounting ring and still utilize the stock mount and rubber surround. Three of the speakers mounting tabs need to be cut shorter and you need to use some self tapping screws. One of the original original screw points are used and the other three locations are screwed down with the self tapping screws. Make sure to center the speaker so the rubber surround can be placed onto the mount correctly. With some

Once the speaker is mounted mark where the screw heads are, and then trim the rubber surround so it can sit flush.

Mount the speaker onto the door and use the stock wiring. ***Make sure to cut the wires that goto the stock tweeter. I cut the wire just above the female clip. The goal is to just have a positive and negative wire connected to the new speaker***

Unfortunately I was rushing to get this installed before it got to dark so I was not able to take any pictures.

Overall the speakers sound great and work perfectly with the stock Bose system.

The sound is much better than stock. I'm more into clarity rather than bass, however it's a good balance of both. Overall I'm very satisfied. The speaker also has a 3 db boost, however I kept it at the 0 db setting.

I got a new n75 and things seem to be o.k. now! I still get throttle cut here and there, but now my drivers side turbo is leaking oil, so K04's will come next year.

Nice work, I bought said infinity speakers and then bitched out and sourced some BOSE ones from eBay. That being said if anyone is looking to buy some I can't return them because I waited to long, so pm if interested.

Re: Aftermarket Bose Front Door Speaker Replacement

The infinity speakers are coaxial meaning that it's a woofer and tweeter combination. If you don't cut the factory tweeter out you'll be running two tweeters in the door. It will also be running in parallel/series (don't remember which one it is) but it'll mess up the impedance.

Re: Aftermarket Bose Front Door Speaker Replacement

Leaving the factory tweeter in will mean you have two tweeters per door, but whether or not to leave it in should be a matter of personal opinion.

It shouldn't create a impedance problem because it will only create a impedance drop at those upper frequencies, and a tweeter takes so much less power to create the same volume output as a woofer. This means it won't pull too much from the amp.

We installed some Alpine Type-S coax speakers in a newer Jetta with the factory tweeters, and we found that it sounded better with the factory tweeters connected. So again, it'd be a matter of preference.

any further attempts with this? i personally would prefer to keep the factory tweeter as well... the idea of sound projecting at just my legs isn't quite audio-listic ... yeah i made that word up

I have the infinity reference 4022i speakers and I left my factory tweeters. I like the sound and I have cranked it up many times without any problems. The hardest part is making a round speaker fit into a triangular housing, but with some grinding and clipping it can be done. I even drilled pilot holes and reused the stock screws.

I just installed last night with tweeters still in and I think it sounds fine. They are much clearer than the old speakers but that's probably due to the extra tweeters. Out of the box the +3db on the tweeter was selected so I put that down to normal for now thinking that might help. The install was pretty easy but I didn't do the best job on getting those things in there. I just trimmed the prongs down and used one screw thinking I'll go back later and secure them better. Even though they are pretty secure with only one screw cause the other prongs just barley fit in the plastic boarder so It's kinda pinching them in. Hope some of that makes sense. Anyone know what the rear door speakers are? I think I have one blown back there too. Are they the same?

now before I click buy on these things... when you type in the car and it says it doesn't fit, is that just because there is the slight modification nessasary ? thanks for those who have reported back to us, I'm going to take care of this soon, it is so annoying!

That would be correct. Our cars have a plastic mounting bracket. Usually if it's not a direct drop in fit, most company's will default it as "not fitting". When the weather clears up, I'll remove a door panel and snap some pictures of how I did it. I put four screws in to ensure a tight fit. One was in the actual original mounting location and the other three were my self made mounting holes. Just remember to mount mark, then drill a pilot hole. If you try to screw into the plastic without a pilot you will risk putting a nice hole in your new speakers from the drill slipping.

Re: Aftermarket Bose Front Door Speaker Replacement

well got both of them in they sound great!

well first off the door panels are much easier then i thought to get off. take off two top screws (on on each side).. then the one in the handle and then the two you reveal once you silde the plastic handle piece off. then lift up and out. and there is 3 orange/red screws holding in the stock mount.

    anyway onto the speakers

a couple prehacked up pictures of speakers

this is how i mounted the speaker on the stock mount.. 1 stock screw.. then made another hole for another screw and used lots f super glue on the others(i know its not pretty but so far its done its job)

    here it is mounted

side notes: i left the stock tweeter in. i just used the stock wiring.. matched right up
i think it sounds better then stock and i also pushed in the +3db button i think it sounds better with the extra bass but its personal preference.. took me about ~3 hours with everthing i took my time though im sure it very well could be a 2 hour job... any questions pm me or post it

So you used one stock hole, then just screwed in the others and just glued them in place?

did you just simply have to swap the wires for the speaker or did you have to make any adjustments?

yeah i used one stock hole and one stock screw together and then i drilled another hole and used a small screw i had in the garage and the other two sides i cut off with plyers just so it would fit and i glue them down

nope zero adjustments on the wiring (it was great)

Re: Aftermarket Bose Front Door Speaker Replacement

I only used the one stock hole and trimmed down the other facets of the speakers so I could fit it in the stock plastic housing and called it good. I would have drilled another hole so I could get more that one screw in but I'm really limited on time and place to work on my car. I also pressed down the button on the tweeter and all seems good on my end as well. No rattling or distortion in sound.

Anyone know if it's the same speakers in the rear doors?

Both of those are 4ohm speakers. Our Bose system runs on a 2ohm load which is why everyone is getting the Infinity Reference. They do make a 3 1/2"

Re: Aftermarket Bose Front Door Speaker Replacement

I just ordered a pair... I could of found them cheaper using shopping.com, on like ebay or some sites, but paying the extra bux with Crutchfield is so worth it. They know what they are talking about... He said you can use these, or the cappa/kappa (sp) from infinity since they are also 2OHM. The cappas are more expensive (120) but I went with the references since people have had great luck with them on here... He said you can also get references or the cappas for the rear as well (rear deck) they sell a bracket so you can use 6.5inch or 5.25 inch... Anyways, will install and let you know how I like it over the blown BOSE!

Correct, for the front 4" in the Kappa series, you want the 42.9.
