Geez...look what I found this morning

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I woke up and saw a puddle on the driveway so I took a look under my car and this is what I find

Edit-I just walked outside and took a look at my driveway and most of the fluid from yesterday is gone and faded. So what fluid wouldn't leave a dark stain?

I wasn't sure where the leak was coming from and when I was putting the belly pan back on, I saw this Is this the axle and cv boot and am I going to have to replace it?

also, I found this just sitting on the belly pan. Any idea where it goes?

I doubt thats from the bumper.

Maybe just a new boot and pack it with grease.

Front Bumper bolt, As for the joint, I would say reboot if you are diy'ing it, if not replace axle.

OK. Here is the bolt. It holds the bumper support to the frame.

The vertical bolt holding the bumper to the support is an allen head key (as seen in the 2nd pic). The bolts holding the bumper support to the frame are torx bolts.

yeah thats true but it could have been like that for who knows how long and water and dirt could get in it. he would have to replace the whole axle within 6 months to a year. so why not save the hassel and money and get it done now.

Re: Geez...look what I found this morning

Is there a way for me to find out if it is transmission fluid that is leaking or if it is oil? I'm concerned because I heard a really loud clunk when I drove over a speed bump last week.

its the oil. the transmission has a special head on its bolt. and the two fluids are different colors so its easy to spot. but it looks to be oil. maybe the bolt wasnt on tight enough?

Damn I think I am having the same problem. I changed my oil last week and since then I have been noticing a small amount of oil leaking right underneath the passenger side axle. Why would oil be coming from there? Either way I am going to take it in and see what they say. Then decide what to do and if I should fix it myself or not.

Other than the leak, how did you guys realize the axle needed to be replaced? Is there a specific noise you hear? I'm hearing a clunking noise coming from my left front when I'm going slow speeds but I havent noticed any kind of leak...

Nope, in my case I just saw the leak and took a look under the car and noticed fluid was splashed all over the passenger side. I remember when I went to get my last service, the tech said that I had a small oil leak in the back of my engine, but he said it was really minor and that I didn't have to worry about it. I'm just confused becase the leak on my driveway wasn't just a tiny spot it was a decent size leak.

On low speed turns you should hear a clicking sound coming from the side with the bad joint/axle. Turning the wheel all the way will make it louder anditf it is busted already don't worry about making it worse by turning the wheel all the way.

TCHUN, I want to see pics NOW!!! You know what I'm talking about, stop holding out lol.

You can't just re-boot an axle. MJM Autohaus has the best price on the axles.

I believe I need to get my CV boot replaced too, VW who did my last sched maint noticed a leak from the CV boot...now I've been hearing a loud humming noise when I cruise around 40-55mph..does a bad CV boot possibly make such noise or is it the wheel bearing going out??

It's the light pinkish/tan on the oil pan just above the first pan bolt to the left. You can also see it on the oil level sensor on the bottom of the pan.

Wheel bearing most likely. I'm due for my driver's side rear too it makes a whirring-roaring noise off & on... also thinking of doing axles & control arms @ the same time $$$
