Got the new tensioner roller today and installed it along with the new cam gasket. Car won't start! It just was a high pitched noise like the starter is turning over put not catching anything.

What happens when you engine get out of timming? What are the symptoms?

If it's out of time, you more then likely bent some valves. How did you time it?

Used white out to mark the belt and exhuast cam gear before I took it off. When I tried to start it the nwent back and looked at the markings they were off even after I made sure they were lined up. I didn't have the front of the car off to do this job, I just did it from above.

Did you also mark the crank pulley? If not I'm guessing that you slipped a few notches on the crank and thus are out of time.

You really need the frt. end off to see the marks. I say do that, retime it, and cross your fingers. You should be able to start it with the frt. end off, just don't run it very long. If it starts, shut it right back off.

Well Sir now I have a few other problems than just breaking down the front of the car and checking. First thing is the car is in a shopping plaza`parking lot two it's been raining for 2 days and forcasted to rain tomorrow and three its cold as crap outside.

I broke in NC and I am suppossed to be leaving Wednesday. If stuff is out of time how will I know are there factory markings?

Are you saying I should be able to restrt it without the radiator and things hooked up? I htought if oyu started the car with the headlights out you will throw codes.

Do a search and I'm sure you can find some pics. Sorry to do that to you, but I'm on day 8 of a 9.5 day work week. I get up at 5 and don't get home until 7.

No hard feelings. I've just been broke for a week now with mult. problems and I am about 2 seconds away from spending crap tons of money to take it to the stealership.

Unfortunately that may be your best bet at this time. To do it yourself you are going to have to remove the belt tensioner, compress and re-lock it down before you can reset your timing belt correctly. You will also have to remove a plug and use an indicator to establish TDC on the crank. If you screw up along the way you will most likely smack a few valves with the piston and be in an even deeper world of hurt.

    Good luck!

    Re: Bad luck continues

Well after many moments of thinking we loaded the car up a UHAUL trailer and towed it home to FL. Now tomorrow I'm going to break downbthe front end and see if I can get it re-timed.

Other than the factory timing marks on the crankshaft and camshafts is there anything else I should look for? I know the camshafts didn't come un-timed because the tensioner chain was still connected the entire time. How do I know if the belt is on correctly( number of teeth between pulleys)? How about putting piston #1 top dead center or will lining of the crankshaft timming marks do that for me? Any other pointers?
