Soooo I hit a deer - some issues...

Driving on I-80 from Penn State to NYC for Thanksgiving break. Everything is going well, found 2 other NY cars to keep a nice 80mph pace. All is going great, then i see the Navigator in front of me swerve and jump. I didn't see the deer because i was talking to the passenger and caught this with perif. vision. Then all of a sudden i see a huge deer across the whole lane, i swerve but still wind up running over his chest/neck. At first the only damage was a ripped rs4 bumper and cracked headlight housing. However, after 10 mins of driving, the CEL comes on. I havent had a chance to scan it yet. Also when i go heavy on the gas, the CEL starts blinking (i know im going to get alot of "change the coilpacks"), and the car shudders/sputters. Also i just noticed that the secondary air (the little hose next to the air filter) is not sucking which can't be right. Any ideas? I' going to try to scan tomorow and get the codes but im having problems with the software.
Also be careful out there... never thought i would ever hit a deer but it happens.

your title made me laugh. imo seems like a charge pipe or the intercooler is damaged. sec air pump is probably also damaged. your car probably looks better than the deer does. any chance for venison jerky in the near future?

Its a 2.8L. Would a broken secondary air pump failure case the sputtering? In terms of jerky - i'll trade a deer worth of jerky for a new bumper... any takers?

As far as the SAP, Make sure the hose didn't just get torn apart or disconnected somewhere closer to the pump then where you where checking. And I don't think a faulty SAP would cause any sputtering but don't take my word for it. BTW, I don't believe it runs the whole time the car is on either.

That sucks man. I did the same thing in my mk4 Jetta, there was blood everywhere, I mean the entire underside of the car and it even wrapped around the rocker panel and onto the rear door of the opposite side of the car. Strangely enough there was no damage. Good luck fixing the car

Really? Tried searching but couldnt come up with an answer. Can anyone say if its on at all times or not for sure? BTW, just started the car up to see if it engages on cold start - didnt (or the hose is ripped somewhere further down the line).

Check out this thread from the other day. LINK According to it, some people run with theirs removed. I believe it should run at a cold start though. Mine always runs for about the first 45 seconds after I start my car and then shuts off.

Re: Soooo I hit a deer - some issues...

I hit a deer in my Honda before. I was going maybe 25 mph and I saw him on the side of the road with hesitation to go. Then he decided and he made it across my front side and I clipped him with my driver's corner side. At this point, brakes are slammed and I did not hit him that hard. Still, it was enough to make him do a nice summersault cartwheel into the brushes in the direction he was traveling. Left a nice little dent in my hood, but that was about it.

And for anyone whom bags on Hondas, I owned 2 of them prior. Those things are more reliable than this Audi will ever be. Though I adore my B5 more than I will ever a Honda. Maybe!

But as for advise pertaining to on what to do. I would bring it to a mechanic for a full diagnosis. It will be worth the $85 or so (average rate).
I hate it when my car acts like a little bitch, treating me like a bitch

your secondary air is not related to that misfire/blinking cel at all. The SAI only comes on for cold starts to pump air into the exhaust so that the 02 would add more fuel to warm it up a bit quicker. i'm going to guess and say it broke some wiring. lift it up and see if anything is blatantly wrong or do some deeper digging.

last time i hit a deer, the deer kept running and my car was totaled.
