Front mesh grill... no opening latch?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys! Brand new to the board! I've been browsing it for a few days, but finally registered the other day. Anyway, I did a bit of searching, and didn't really see an answer for this. How is it possible to have a full front mesh grill, and still be able to open the hood? I've seen a few pictures of people having a full grill with no opening for the hood latch. Is there something special that needs to be done to accomplish this?

Also, I've seen a couple people have a pretty cool looking hood? It's one that goes over top of the headlights a little and has a much more aggressive look. Can anyone tell me what kind it is?

Anyway, I'll be posting some pics of my A4 in the next day or so.

u would have to run the latch cable elsewhere so u can pop it or make a hole to get the latch through. Be creative.

Re: Front mesh grill... no opening latch?

You just cut the plastic peice off of the end of the latch and bend it down. When you pop the handle from inside the car, the hood pops up high enough to slide your hand in and push the latch forward.

Yeah, I figured that maybe they ran the latch somewhere else, but I wasn't sure where. I'm still getting used to my shiney new A4.... well, new to me. Thanks for the help though!

Re: Front mesh grill... no opening latch?

For my mesh grill, the latch still pops out like normal. Never had to cut any holes. Only had to slightly shave the sides of the latch a bit to make it work.

It all depends on the mesh size and pattern to get an idea on what to do.

The one I have is the UBERHAUS hood grille found over at LLTek.com. I also put the OEM rings on it (and not the RS badge). The latch will pop out of the 2nd ring just like it does with the OEM hood grille.

Re: Front mesh grill... no opening latch?

I was just going to get some mesh from like, PepBoys, and attach it to the brackets of the current, stock grill. I didn't want to use the rings or anything. I'll have to see how far up the hood can go, and if I can slide my hand under it to open the latch, but I didn't think it went up that high.

Re: Front mesh grill... no opening latch?

Mine is a DIY. The hole is there for the release lever, but the mesh pattern is wide enough that it isn't even noticable. Plus, I do use the rings, so that covers it up somewhat. I'm not a fan of not having the rings, but that's personal opinion.

BTW, to threadjack, however it's nice to see someone from Bloomington. My company is based there and I'm in town a lot.

Paul (CyberPMG) - do you still have the instructions to modify the hood release latch. I remember seeing something with the Uberhaus grille. Was a step by step to modify the release for mesh.

I just bent the handle together some. Act like you're squeezing the "V" together. It doesn't take much, but once I pop the hood from inside the car, I can still pull up the hood a little and get at the lever inside.

If you get a boser, just rock hood pins and eliminate the latch.
