Just ordered my new timing belt kit since when I had a censor replaced a few weeks ago they said it had shown some signs of wear, figured better safe than sorry. Anyone have any thoughts on a good price for labor? They said $900 but that was with parts I think, and I paid under $300 for the kit from blauparts.com, or anyone in the seattle area willing to meet up and help me out one weekend lol??

    Re: Timing belt

A good garage should be able to do it in 4 hours or less if they know what they're doing. That's to replace the timing belt, serpentine belt, tensioner and water pump.

The DIY is a bit scary because of all the steps and doing it carefully the first time will take you ~10 hours on the high side. Read the HOWTO and discussions - if you understand what you're doing in terms of making marks on the belt then lining everything up right, you can't mess it up. Everything else is just patience and grunt work.

for regular indenpendent euro shop, TB job on 1.8T is piece of cake for them and is around 4-5 hours.

my local indenpendent euroshop do a lot of TB on 1.8Ts and they charge $250 for labour.

you can try search "Audi Timing belt" at craigslist on your area.

I dont think the DIY is that scary, but your right i do feel like having someone explain it to you helps way more than the DIY...

To the OP, if you want to attempt it yourself, PM me and we can talk and I will guide you through it

    Re: Timing belt

The DIY is by no means hard, you just need to take your time and make sure things line up, take pictures as you take it apart if you have a bad memory. I had no issue my first time and took me about 4 hours.
