Unhappy Need Help-Timing Belt Tensioner Roller Died

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
On leg two of my trip after fixing the timing chain tensioner my belt tensioner roller started giving me problems. It wouldn't kep the proper tension on the belt. I would set it then loose tension so when we drove you could hear the tension roller smaking around and bouncing off the belt tensioner spring pin. Finally the metal plate that comes off the back of the roller broke and the car died. So I guess I've got a couple questions.

    1) Will I need to replace the belt tensioner due to the miles and miles of the roller bouncing off the spring pin in it?

    2) What is the easiest and proper way of installing the parts properly? I don't think the tension roller was quit right to start with.

    3) I've also got a leaking camshaft seal due to the timing chain tension replacement from earlier this week. It's a brand new seal why is it leaking?

It sounds as if you didn't set it properly. You should have compressed the hydraulic tensioner, set the belt tens. with the mechanical tens. and then released the hyd. one. It's there to take up the slack as the belt stretches.

Also what is the function of the metal clip/pin on the front of the tensioner roller? I believe it fine tunes the tension. What is the exact location of the clip suppossed to be when tightened and is that all that keeps the roller in place?

I think you were supposed to note the orientation of the roller and set the new one to match before releasing the hydraulic tensioner thing.

Here's my original one with my nice leaky water pump

12/23/09 - My car has been phenomenal to me. Runs strong. Don't think I'm ever going to sell it. Rather throw $7k into it for a refresh than buy a new A4 that has no dipstick.
    12/5/10 - 100k miles & counting!
    9/22/13 - 146k+ & running strong w/a new TB, water pump, etc.

That is to set the tensioner roller in the correct position (because it is an eccentric) to provide about 5mm of gap between the roller arm and the gas tensioner.

damn. Larry.. I just did a 2.8 TB today and after looking at your 1.8 picture the 1.8 is so much easier. one cam to worry about
