    70-80k service / Tune-up

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I noticed that I slacked on the car and I want to give it a long needed tune-up. I posted a thread a while ago with similar question, but now I want to focus on items that can improve performance. I noticed more vibration at idle, so I guess mounts need to be replaced.
I guess tune up will consist of all spark plugs, but what about injectors and coil packs? Can't think of what else I can do.
Just shoot up what you think is needed.
Timing belt will stay till it snaps or I feel like changing it. Second hand warranty till 100k and service says 100k maintenance to do it.

My 1.8 needs a tuneup....probably gonna drop it off at LQ sometime in the next few weeks. The 3.0L require Timing belts @ 100k? My car is over due for it.

Baaaad idea. If the TB breaks you bend your valves and it's mucho dinero. Now, you may think "who cares, the dealer will pay because it's due at 100k". Well, first, they inspect and recommend it be done earlier. I hear once they do that and you ignore it it's no longer their problem. That may not be 100% true or accurate but I can guarantee you if it breaks you'll have to fight to get it all repaired for nothing. I paid a couple friends to do mine at 75k and am happy I did because my water pump was leaking.

FYI, the 3.0 is more $ than the 1.8 for the TB, or so I've read. In any case, go Euro shop over dealer if you can't DIY because it's expensive there.

Anyway, routine maintenance after neglect would be a good synthetic oil change and oversized filter, new plugs, new fuel filter (easy DIY), inspect air filter and clean out airbox, brake inspection (may even want to bleed brakes if brakes are fine and fluid is older than 2 years).

Things I did were use a turkey baster to draw out and replace power steering fluid with fresh Pentosin CHF 11S over the course of a few months, replace coil packs in anticipation of failure (or at least get new ones for trunk just in case), get a coolant flush at the stealership. I also did the seafoam treatment at 65k.

Finally, if you're REALLY into it, inspect the rear coolant flange and ECT sensor for any leakage. Consider replacing the valve cover gasket (easy DIY). Vibration at idle could be rotted snub mount so do that and see if it helps before the mounts.

12/23/09 - My car has been phenomenal to me. Runs strong. Don't think I'm ever going to sell it. Rather throw $7k into it for a refresh than buy a new A4 that has no dipstick.
    12/5/10 - 100k miles & counting!
    9/22/13 - 146k+ & running strong w/a new TB, water pump, etc.

    Re: 70-80k service / Tune-up

audi sent letters updating the users manual stating that the timing belt be replaced at 75k... even though you have the warranty until 100k, i think you better check with your dealer because if the belt breaks they may not want to foot the bill.

    Re: 70-80k service / Tune-up

wait til TB snaps, then it is $7000+ repair job including rebuilt engine.
there has been quit some number of 1.8Ts and 3.0s that TB break before 80k.
(often it is the Audi OEM Plastic made Waterpump failed and cause the snap of Belt)

sooner or later you will still hav to do it, why not do it ealier not only for a prevention of $7000 and a additional of peace of mind.

replaced mine at 74k for under $650.
    parts $400 + labour $250 = $650 for my AVK-3.0 engine.

I was tired of drivng a car knowing that every moment you drive, the belt may snap and u will never know when the snap will occur.

    good luck.

    Re: 70-80k service / Tune-up

They only updated service interval for 1.8T, not 3.0, and I don't have grand laying around just for TB. I will probably do it at 80k miles. My car was at the dealer at 65k miles for recall and they said that belt looks fine and it was like a year ago.

    As for maintenance,
Fuel Filter was replaced few months ago
Brake Fluid replaced about the same time.

I will see if my local shop can do coolant flush, but I guess it is done with TB job so I may wait for that.

Seafoam, just put in the fuel tank? or how exactly, seen howto for 1.8 not 3.0

I have some new powersteering fluid from stealership, so may straw out as much oil as I can and just dump remaining bottle in there.

    Re: 70-80k service / Tune-up

i have a 2004. my manual states the timing belt should be done at 75,000 miles so basically that means they updated the service interval and thus updated the manual. you have to do it ANYWAY. better safe than sorry.

    Re: 70-80k service / Tune-up

I'll post picture of a timing belt, it looks a bit worn, but I've seen worse.
So what else should I do?
    And what plugs are recommended?

    Re: 70-80k service / Tune-up

I reaplced my spark plugs at 73k mi.
    NGK Platimum.

My fuel filter got clogged at 75mi and had to replace the faulty fuel pump which is $700.

cost of fuel filter replacement is under $100 at stealership. You may want to check that out as well. There's a 3.0 fuel filter DIY post here.

by the way, when you do TB, dont forget to replace Valve Cover Gasket as well.
(most TB kits inlcude this part too and labour is free since this part needs to be taken out at the same time)

Valve Cover Gasket usually start to leak after 5 years of use. You'll notice some oil on the spark plugs.

    Oh...My...God...
Have I accidentally wandered on to the Honda forum or something?

Yeah, you do that. Just wait for the T-Belt to snap...then replace it no problem. Good idea
