I have a 2002 a4 3.0 and when i am running my car hard, my gauge console screen shows the big oil symbol which i think means that the oil is low. if i go check my oil right when this happens, the oil level is fine. i'm using penzoil platinum 5-40(bought the car used and thats what they put in it) could this be a bad sensor? sludge?

Is the oil pump that has no pressure, stop the car or you will blow your engine.

had that happen to me once! but I was in the process of doing the seafoam treatment, so im guessing seafoam had something to do with it.

Just put a piece of black tape over the idiot light on the gauge and drive it like you stole it....

Check your oil pressure with a gauge if you have one. I took mine to the dealership and they checked the pressure and diagnosed it for $50. Pressure was perfect and it ended up being the oil pressure sensor and cost me $18 to fix myself.

    Re: Oil Light

Sludge is the big issue on the 1.8. Since you're 3.0 I wouldn't panic like I would on my car but perhaps consider doing the amsoil or seafoam treatment and getting the oil and filter changed (I support synthetic regardless of 1.8 or 3.0). It's true the pump could be impeded at the pickup but who knows. 1_ate_t shows it could be a sensor so that's not out of the question.

12/23/09 - My car has been phenomenal to me. Runs strong. Don't think I'm ever going to sell it. Rather throw $7k into it for a refresh than buy a new A4 that has no dipstick.
    12/5/10 - 100k miles & counting!
    9/22/13 - 146k+ & running strong w/a new TB, water pump, etc.
