Transplant window trim from 1.8 to 2.8?

I tried painting my chrome window trim with Plasti-Dip and it was a disaster. It wouldn't stick because of several factors..mainly because I couldn't tape around the trim without it touching the trim -- then the tape got 'plastidipped' to the trim and when I took it off I could hardly get it to come off without peeling it all off.

Now what I did today was bought a driver/front door from a 1.8t (same color, no painting required) and it has the nice black rubber trim on it whereas my 2.8 door has chrome. So I've committed to blacking out my trim.

Has anybody ever gotten the trim from a 1.8 off and put it onto a 2.8?

So what your trying to do is take all the trim off of your 2.8 and paint it? Did I get that right?

Go to the b6 forum and search for the "once you go black" thread.

Well no, the trim on my new door is black rubber like it is on the 1.8t. I want to take it off and replace it with the rest of the window trim that is coming from the 1.8t donor car I found.

I give up on painting it.. it scratches far too easily. I just want to know if people have done a full 1.8t trim transplant to a 2.8.

Hey thanks for the tip-- that stuff looks a lot like the Plasti-Dip after it started peeling off. haha

I still don't think that is the best/easiest way of "doing it right", and that is purely coming from my 10 hours I spent taping, spraying, spraying, spraying, untaping.. yelling..taping, spraying, spraying, spraying, spraying, untaping.. less yelling. There are just a few places where I think it would be very difficult to do with the trim still on, at least with my B5. I spent so much time doing just 1 side, I am too weary to want to do something like that again for at least a month.

Thought of using black vinyl tape?

I think the vinyl tape might go on easy but it's not going to look good. It's going to be really shiny. But there are lots of color options!

Yeah the stick-on solutions don't seem very good to me because I want it to withstand bad weather, rock chips, people rubbing up against it..etc. My plastidip is already peeling off in a 5 inch strip. It flaps in the wind.

I went the other way. My drivers door and rear door had some rust on them, so I bought 2 doors from a 1.8 and swapped them over. It was kind of a pain in the ass. You have to take the window out of the door so you can get to the pop rivets.

The window, frame, regulator and all comes out in a piece, but it's still a little tricky

I think I will have to be doing this for my driver door to take the skin off and pair it with the window/regulator or whatever.

This will be a good learning experience..

Eric, I had another idea for you. How about bringing it to my painter and just having him quote the work out? He does full Mopar restorations so I am sure he has ideas for blacking trim out. Give John a call 507-947-3120 Tell him Rob with the Audi sent you. He is about 2 hours away but WELL worth it.

Read his post. He picked up a spare door because his was rusted. The new door has black trim, and he has chrome trim. It doesn't match.

I'm obviously insinuating that he should paint the black ones chrome.

Shit, if I bring it to a painter I can't guarantee I won't just have him respray the entire car.......... Isn't that trim on the door rubber? I forgot to check actually. Painting the rest would still make it different types. Hmmm.

I'll consider calling him, thanks for the tip Rob.
