Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My car is an 05' 1.8T FWD and current at 70k miles. What synthetic motor oil grade do you guys recommend? 5w30 or 5w40 or something else and why?

    thanks

Castrol Syntec 0w-30 or Mobil1 0W-40. Stick with these two oil brands/grades.

    Take your pick: Clicky click

Personally I prefer 0W-40. Ran it in the A4 for 100K miles with no issues. Have had it in my '03 C230K for over 200K miles and it still runs strong.

I usually stick with 5w40 all year round but will be trying 0w30 for the winter.

I fancy Quartz total 9000, formula known as Elf.

Sorry guy...I bought the car used and the previous owner practically rob everything off the car...stuff like first aid pouch, hazard triangle, cargo net, and the owners manual. Hence my reason for asking in the forum.

Has anyone here ever used ROYAL PURPLE SYNTHETIC MOTOR OIL? I hear it's one of the top brand oils and works really well.

I just put it in this last time... i can't notice any difference. I think on the next change i might try the Amsoil.

    Re: synthetic oil grade question?

Royal Purple is probably ok, I'd prefer one of the aforementioned oils. Amsoil is pretty pricey and probably overkill. I like Total (Elf) myself as well.

    Re: synthetic oil grade question?

hmmm. I apologize I didn't think about that. Bought my car certified pre-owned so it couldn't be more perfect unless it was new. But check this out I took it straight from page 280 of my manual: The engine oil which was first put into your engine has a viscosity grade of SAE 0W-30. You can use this oil across all temperature ranges for normal driving...
It also says to only use oil that has the following on the back of the container:
    API service SJ
    ACEA A2 or A3
There is also a note that says: If your vehicle is equipped with the 1.8L turbo, 170 hp engine, then please use only special engine oil that expressly conforms to Volkswagen oil standard. VW502 00 will also be seen on the back. I think I used castrol full synthetic last time. You can use 0W-30 all year. I am, and it is about 20 degrees outside right now where I live.
