    AWM engine....ugh

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
where the F is the thermostat!? i have a good general idea. most of the write-ups on-line say its by the lower radiator hose....which i can not seem to locate it. sooooooo i'm thinking its behind the alternator in the engine block. i did find one write-up for a B6 1.8T and that is where his was. i have a B5 1.8T.

    HELP!

You can get it from the bottom and probably make a mess, or you can do it the hard way and try to get it from the top.

The T-Stat housing should be plastic. If you pull the Throttle body hose of the throttle body you should be able to look straight at it, it's on the side of the block and the lower radiator hose goes to it.
Otherwise it's not a 100% straight shot getting it from the bottom, but I think it's easier from the bottom.

lower radiator hose is at the bottom drivers side of the radiator. follow it upwards and towards the engine block. it ends behind the p/s pump with 2 10mm bolts to the block, under the intake manifold. easiest to get at with a deep 10mm and a swivel head ratchet or a ball head 5mm allen. on an extension with a ratchet.

Socket, extension, ratchet, and a light helps.

    Re: AWM engine....ugh

yeah once i figured out what the hell was going on it took me 20 mins. shit sucked only because i was planning on it being on the bottom like the older engines (thats what my haynes manual says) so i didnt see it down there and i went to start pulling everything apart....getting it in service position thinking it was wedged in there by the engine block....so after some more searching i came across a B6 how to....and i got-r-done. man i could have had it done soooo much sooner.... oh well, i learned a shitload today! haha. thanks for your help fellas!

hey kevin i need to talk to you....i need some VAG service. i got something crazy going on with my MAF sensor which is making my car run like poo. my scan tool doesnt do much but tell me there is something going on with the MAF and some other sensor (o2).

    Re: AWM engine....ugh

The side of the block has a "bell" bottom on it, and the engine sits on a bit of an angle, so it makes a ledge for fluids to sit.

How much is coming out/down? as fast as you pour it in?

    Re: AWM engine....ugh

no it just drizzles. like in the last pic. its not dumping out or anything just enough to make me concerned. also while running the heater it was not heating up inside the car. on a good note. my temp. gauge rose to normal

    Re: AWM engine....ugh

If the heat isnt working inside the car you probably have yet to bleed the system. You'll have to locate the heater hose going into the firewall and back this off a bit until you see some anti freeze coming out the small hole on top (at least this is the procedure on the V6). There is also probably going to be another one somewhere near the t-stat housing which will be a bleeder screw you'll need to loosen until fluid comes out. Be sure to have the heater on full heat when your doing this and the engine running.

Get a hose and flush the area under the thermostat housing with water. It will clean up the left over pink coolant and will let you know down the line if you are leaking any.

well the drizzle stopped maybe it was left over when i pulled the t-stat out. fluid came out like a waterfall...nebone i wish i could have found that DIY. the problem was that none of the DIYs were written for a 2001.5 (B5 AWM engine code) A4 i may do one and specifically state what engine type and year the write up is for. i know most of you probably know your shit but i was lost....and it may save someone else a lot of time.

^ Yea but I think that alternator bracket is different on the B6 so more work is involved.

yeah i know now...i'm just saying it would be nice to have one that is specifically for the B5 AWM engine. it was a pain in the ass going through all the write-ups trying to figure out where the t-stat housing was and once i found how the hell do i get to it. i'm not very mechanically inclined if you havent already noticed :) but i'm learning
