WTF just happened?

I was driving home from dinner and as I'm getting on the freeway the car starts to sputter. It then starts flashing the CEL so I drove (coasted) about another mile through the on ramp to a gas station. It feels like the fuel isn't getting through. It's VERY rough and sputtering. So I got it towed to Audi and I have to call them in the morning. Anyone have any ideas? I'm lost

Is that what happens when one goes out? I know coilpacks were an issue in the B6's are they becoming an issue in the B7's.

OH Yeah I appreciate the replies make me feel better that something isn't more seriously wrong.

From the sound of it I would say a coil pack is bad. If you had a vag-com or knew some one they/you would be able to know quickly. But when my coilpack went bad my car ran like crap and flashed/stayed on CEL. Hope that it is a coilpack and they can get you in tomorrow.

Another way to tell is to remove it with the engine running. If it gets worse then its good, if it stays the same then it is shot.

Same thing happened to me on Halloween night. Really violent idle and smelled like gas was pouring out of the exhaust.

Replaced the bad coilpack, and drove it home. the next morning ANOTHER one went bad, then i just replaced the remaining 3 to be sure. Runs fine ever since.

By the way, check if your audi service department is open on the weekends... because it also happened to me on a Friday night and all of the ones in San Diego were closed.. bastards. Good luck tomorrow.

i had one go out on me driving home on night too. got it towed with the roadside and A.C replaced all 4 just to keep me happy. its a bitch for sure because you never know when its gonna happen. agreed them bastards

Don't kid yourself; the same trip-interrupting things happen on Mercedes, Volvo, GM, Ford, Porsche, BMW, Lexus, Infinity....etc...I've been there. If it was an Audi thing, then ALL of them would continually go bad.

Definitely a coilpack and it's covered under warranty. I trust the reliability and lack of problems of my A4 way beyond other cars I've owned including MB and BMW.
