Ac unit quit working - cold as hell one day, hot the next. Dealer replaced compressor, dryer etc etc all under CPO warranty. Would have been over $1500, but covered under CPO warranty.

Clutch... Around $3000 at dealer, paid much less elsewhere.

    2008
    problem 1:Oxygen Sensor
problem 2:Oxygen sensor again but dealer said it was ECM..so they changed it.
Both happened within first 1500 miles and it's problem free since then
    Yes, covered under warranty

Re: If you have had a major issue ($1,500+) with your S4. POST

Before I owned the car. Previous owner gave me service records....

    Clutch replaced: 53,934 - 1/19/2007
    Transmission 2nd gear & synchronizer replaced: 64,793 - 8/13/2007

I think the clutch was around $2700 at a dealership and may have been covered under an extended warranty. The 2nd gear and synchro was around $5500. I think he paid for that. I would have to go back and dig through the records, but I think those are the amounts paid IIRC.

My god, a 2nd gear syncro fix was almost $6,000?! That's fucking madness!

Wasn't me man. LOL... But yeah, definitely some lunacy there. I bet you could get that 2nd gear fixed cheaper than $5500. He had it done at a dealership though....

I cringe thinking about how bad a shifter he was most likely. But at least my clutch and trans should be in decent shape now (I hope - knock on wood).

I refuse to pay that kind of money to maintain a car that isn't even that high performance. $5,500 for the entire TRANSMISSION?! ok, but a fucken SYNCRO repair? Umm no.

Re: If you have had a major issue ($1,500+) with your S4. POST

It actually said the second gear and the synchro were both replaced. Not saying that warrants $5500. Just stating what I read on the service record.

This happened in CT apparently. When I asked, I had a local service guy here tell me it was probably so expensive because you cannot replace a single gear and you have to replace the entire transmission.... But that sounds kinda wacky to me and I dismissed that as BS.

Seems like the dealership taking advantage of a rich guy. I bet the car was under 2 yrs old at time?

oh really? What were your symptons? Every few days it gets hot, my a/c doesn't want to run. The next day it works fine. I take it to the dealership and they say im using the a/c wrong. The service rep tells me i have to use the "auto" button first. Stupid b!tch.

Sounds like the original owner was beating up on the transmission. Synchros just don't crack for the hell of it. That and second gear, yeah... i know from experience.

I think if I recall the records correctly the orignal owner bought it in 6/2004 and it was manufactured in 4/2004. So it was just over three years old at the time of that trans work. And he had owned it just over three years. Is drive train warranty only for 3 years or 4 years on the 2004 S4s? I thought mileage warranty was 40,000 or 50,000. If 3 years he paid cash money green for that work and it wasn't warrantied I would assume. Not sure if some or all of it was warrantied because I don't know the guy.

I agree - he was most likely beating on it or doesn't know how to shift - or it was a magical combination of both attributes.... The aftermarket folks I've asked have said this transmission is pretty decent. Not bulletproof, but decent so the original owner was doing something wrong is my bet.

gears and synchros can be replaced...pretty common actually...and 5500...eh...seems kinda high even for a dealer.....and the s4 trans is cake to tear down and repair....

got lucky this week, just bought the s4 last week used with 38k. was driving to work tuesday, car cut out on power, and cel was flashing hardcore. Called audi, they said tow it over dont drive it. Had it for three days, ended up being a blow cat. Tech said it would have been 2k+ had I not had warranty left. Said it was the first time he ever seen a cat fry up to pieces.

I would have them go over the car with a fine toothed comb. Are there any modifications on the car? That could be a symptom of another problem (very high EGTs most likely or running super rich or a combo of both at different points in the powerband). And there could be some other major things that caused your cat to go that early....

Ya they went over the whole car for a few days they couldnt figure it out. They said everything else checks out great, said my motors real strong. My car has no mods at all which is the weird part. The tech said hes never seen a cat go.
