WTF is going on?

I come home today and turn off the B5 2.8, about 5-10s later I hear what sounds like a vacuum cleaner running on the passenger side of the engine. Every so often the vacuum turns on and then off...

cooling fans are definitely not spinning

does the 2.8 have an electric water pump? If so, i'm not sure why it would turn on...car wasnt even at max operating temp. Ambient temp is like 27/28F. What is this noise i am hearing?

That would definitely be my guess, but mine "runs" only when the car is running. You can bypass it but it's not a cheap job, my mechanic told me that the thing could go out completely and the car would still run perfectly. If you have a CEL that is probably the cause.

Thats what my mechanic said too...but why in the hell would it be running when the car is off?

I just disconnected the battery to avoid a dead battery in the morning...

Are they easy to replace?

I have a CEL anyway because of an exhaust issue, but not a biggy... but i dont have a reader so im not sure if there a CEL for this problem.

when i got home it stayed on for a probably 60-90s, shut-off, then intermittently turn on for a few seconds (5-10) and then turn-off... the intermittent on/off happened 5-10X more. Finally, I just yanked the -neg terminal on the battery.

Mine will run for about 20 seconds when I first turn the car on then go off.. and sometimes run when sitting idle at a stop sign or red light.

bah, SOB. A coolant leak 2-3 weeks ago, and now another problem... B5 is just checking to see if i still love her. After buying Adam's B5-S4, she knows...

any risk of damaging other components while driving around with the problem? since it runs after key-off then I should probably disconnect the battery everytime to avoid killing it.

remove it for now. you don't need it.

and if you have emissions, then just make sure you get it back in there by inspection time..

thanks Sean. any DIY or pictures you know of to remove it? Or maybe a fuse i can pull to avoid draining the battery? no emissions in MI.

haha i just re-connected my battery and immediately the SAI pump started to whine... this is the m-fer making the noise:

There's actually a plug facing the front of the car right on the front of the SAI. Mine was kind of a b!tch to get off because of road grime. I eventually just took the pump and hoses out.

How did you unplug it? Are those pics from under the car?

yeah those pics are from underneath the car on the passenger side near the front wheel. Soon as you drop the belly pan it is sitting right there next to the oil pan. The e-connector is facing the front of the vehicle, with age and road grime I snapped the locking tab off. Afterwards, cut up 1 of my best buy rewards mini card in the shape of a rectangle and cover the end and wrapped the mofo w/ 8lbs of electrical tape. Once i find that money tree I will shake it for $230 and replace the SAI. For now, i will live without. However, i still have no idea how to remove it...i tried last night in my 25F garage and gave up when i couldnt feel my toes or fingers.
