As with most things that don't break, but progressively go bad...you may not really notice your mounts are bad because you get used to the feeling of drivign with bad mounts.
I noticed mine were bad when I saw fluid all over my Pass side one at about 57K miles( no fluid leaking from my Driver's side, but it had just about as much play as my visually bad passenger one). I replaced my snub at about 50K as it was cracked/very worn w/ a Stern from PureMS. I'm pretty sure my mounts were going out then and just put extra stress on the rest of the system.
I was having exhaust issues at the time and had my flex-pipe replaced (welded in a new one) which caused my exhaust to sit a little closer to the subframe. I started noticing my exhaust rubbing/rattling on the subframe when I'd rev the engine or turn sharply.
I installed 2.7T S4 Mounts and after noticed shifting was alot smoother (especially the 1-2 shift and had alot less issues when shifting into 2 from 1 or 3, cold or warmed up) and overall the car felt alot more solid (only way I can describe it). It was as if the shifting, steering and handling was less sloppy.
