Fitting wide ass tires, this ones for you Jim!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    I have a set of HRE 526's, 18x10 and 18x8.5.

They clear the uprights and I'm going to a larger lip on the front so it will be 18x10 as well, widebody is in the works...

What tire sizes can be worked with the stock hubs/uprights?

Just sent you this as a PM...

This car really inspired me. It runs 285/35-18 Pilot Sports on 18x9.5 et20 Rota wheels. The height won't work well on a B5 so a 285/30-18 is the way to go. The overall height has to stay very close to stock.

Re: Fitting wide ass tires, this ones for you Jim!

As far as tire fitment problems go, this is the bitch of the bunch. The curvature of the rear upright dictates the tire height relative to the inner sidewall. Go taller and out or stock size and stay tucked.

    245/40-17 Yoko Guardex on 17x8 et35.

225/50-16 Sumi HTR 50Z on stock Swings.
This tire is almost exactly the same height and width but the wheels have a different offset placing it just a bit closer to the upright. That clearance disappeared in a hurry.

yeah thats a lot of rubber on that allroad. Has anyone tried to either bend that upright or fab up another one? It has a really odd curve and looks like there plenty of space if it curved a bit wider. I know im not comfortable with the engineering involved with suspension but looks like a plausible idea and im sure like everyone who wants to ride wider wheels would buy it.

if your going to be messing with the geometry of that piece you really need to understand what the change will do to the entire suspension. you would have to get the angels perfectly symmetrical on both sides while keeping forces on the joints/pivot points the same. it could probably be done but isnt something you could do with a hammer in your garage.

Re: Fitting wide ass tires, this ones for you Jim!

Bending the upright would destroy the entire rear suspension geometry.

If someone had the time and machinery it would be feasible to make a new upright. As long and the angles of the ends of the upright remain the same in reference to each other, basically meaning static camber would remain unchanged, you could do anything you wanted to the middle curvature. Loop that guy out wide allowing to clear wider tires.

If i get bored this weekend, i could model something up in solidworks and show you guys

Re: Fitting wide ass tires, this ones for you Jim!

Are the rear uprights different on the S4 or A6? If so, maybe they allow for more clearance and will bolt up?

Great thread, I thought I'd be doomed to 225/45-17 with my car... it's good to know there is hope!

IIRC S4's are identical, and A6's have a completely different rear end setup.

I have been curious about making a different rear spindle as well. It seems to hinder a lot of people, but I don't think anybody would be able to meet the pricepoint of the avg consumer.

It isn't a difficult job. Fixture the hub and mating portions of the spindle. Cut out the offending section and weld in a new piece. You would need good welds and some basic engineering but there is no reason it can't be stronger than stock at close to the same weight.

Or I could scan it into a point cloud, alter it in cad and run FEA, cnc a mold for lost cores from 40# foam, coat those wax cores in ceramic with sprues, melt the wax out and replace it with molten aluminum. Little machining and now we have stronger uprights with perfect clearance and they weigh half as much as the stockers. All I need is a $10k deposit to get this rolling.....

My car isn't even worth that much...

I could see somebody making a pretty basic boxed in bend that would clearance a wide tire. I don't see anyone coming up w/ 10K to do the CNC & molded process.

10k deposit?? geeze thats kinda steep. I could model those guys up, run solidworks FEA, and throw the G-code on the CNC mill. prolly mill some 6061 T6 aluminum, which we get donated for our formula car team I could make some fo free and then charge 10k! And people say Mechanical Engineering sucks psh

Need any help? I could do a job like that, or relearn the stuff I would need to.

Just out of curiosity, a while back, i had seen a b5 3d model floating around, does anyone know of one? Doesn't really matter what format its in. If that model had the upright in it, that would make things ALOT easier to change and play with. Could even shove some fatty tires in and check fitment once i change it.!
