    New/Replacement Transmission options

so my tranny is officially dead now. i've been dreading it for a while. the 1-2 slider is nearly locked up on me, pretty sure i bruised my hand from trying to shift it today. i've already done a great deal of research but im not sure what to do next.

    1) Somehow find a used transmission and install that (easiest)
    2) have a shop do the JHM rebuild kit for me
    3) send my tranny to stasis and have them fix it

any other options i missed? where can i start to look for a used transmission?

I would go with 2. It might cost lil more but buying a used tranny might cost more in the long run. The last thing you want to do is install a used unit and in a month same thing happens.

    I just did this.

Went with JHM kit. For me, the process was expensive, but I repleaced everything I could. 5500$ and down a car for a month.

JHM kit is awesome, why would you put a used one in? 1-2 slider will go out eventually 90% of the time, your just delaying the problem.

Emil, JHM rebuild all the way who knows how long the wait time is for stasis right now. Not to mention the 1 week each way it would take for sending your trans to cali and back. East coast European in Greenland NH has a reputable tranny guy they use that specializes in Audi Transmissions rebuilds. JHM KIT all the way and then with the money you save not going with stasis you can send your center diff out and get that done!

    Back up!

I muscled through the tough shifter for a few weeks and it loosened it self up over usage so i could drive it pretty good.
However, today 1-2 are completely locked up. After grinding it just a bit shifting into 4th, it wouldn't go into 1st once i came to a stop. I was on a small hill so i got started by 3rd gear.

I'll be going with the jhm rebuild kit, however i'm not sure what to do about labor. I do not want to try and pull the tranny myself on the floor, but i do want to do the rebuild part of it. Should i have a shop pull the tranny for me, and i rebuild it at home?

And why the hell is it that everything goes to a flippin' group buy after I buy it? You guys need a 3 year price match guarantee or some sh*t. When is the JHM stage III fueling kit group buy starting?

Why would you go and do such a thing? Debt is the American way, anything else is simply. . . .unAmerican.

    /rant

OP. JHM rebuild kit and pay a shop to rebuild it. That way, your headache=zero and someone else covers the work and parts if something goes south. Also the word on the street is the stasis rebuild is for ballers and people who track their cars. You don't sound like either. . .

I dont think im going to try and do this myself in fear of screwing something up. The best option for myself is to find someone moderatly local to the Rochester NY area to do the whole thing..

Anyone know of someone good in the Rochester Area?

    034 Street Motor Mounts
    034 Race Tranny Mounts
    AWE DTS
    JHM rebuilt Kit
    2 Cracked tranny mount brackets
    Fluid
    Labor
    JHM Short Shifter
    JHM Linkage
    ect...

Like I said, they will all go eventually, rebuild it. Tranny shop chared 100$ to press everything in and out other then that, it was a simple process (even without a lift)

    Re: New/Replacement Transmission options

    update:

Decided to have Greg at SSP rebuild my tranny. Gave me a good deal on the jhm rebuild kit, and a good labor rate. (2100 parts and labor)

Dropped it off saturday afternoon, had it finished sunday night! went to pick it up monday afternoon, but i forgot to give him my key so he obviously couldnt test if it was working. When i got there monday to take it home, shifting mechanisms all worked great, but car wouldnt move in first. I had to get home, so i caught a ride back up to boston with my folks while he tried to fix it again. Called me up a few hours later, found the problem (bent shift fork) fixed it, re installed the tranny same night! picking the car up this friday and from what i hear it shifts like butter! :-) From my experience, Greg is a great mechanic and a hard worker! would do business again.

Then do so. That's the core charge I paid, and I will happily send it back for my $1k returned. Merely throwing it out there if anyone wanted to work on a tranny out of their car, and then swap and sell theirs.

No skin off my back either way.
