Re: Soo what do you do when the magnet comes out of the magnetic drain plug?

wow.. hmm stick a magnet in there and hope to get lucky? haha either that or your dropping the pan, chances are it is stuck to the bottom of the pan, still doing its intended job lol. I've heard of these being soft and getting f-ed up but never saw that happen.

Re: Soo what do you do when the magnet comes out of the magnetic drain plug?

I would get a magnet on a stick and go to town. If that doesn't work drop the pan.

I'm not really sure how that could happen, being that it's a magnet and all. Are you sure it's in there?

Hope and pray it's not stuck to the crank.

Other than that, buy another one, drop the pan and go fishin.

Isn't the oilpan and block aluminum???
So It would stick on the crank or more likely the oil head where the oil gets pumped up again. I believe this is steel or so.
    Good luck.

    Drop the oil pan.

If I was in the slightest doubt that magnet was sitting in there somewhere, I'd know no peace, untill I made 100% certain.

Stick a long magnet in there to try to grab it. I have one that is the diameter of a pen on a expandable pole.

It's most likely stuck to the oil pick up tube. The oil pan is aluminum so magnet won't stick to it.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but doesnt the 1.8t have a plastic windage tray to seperate the crank and rods from the rest of the pan? I'd say it's on the pickup tube. just hope it isnt blocking the screen :S

It does but a small piece like that can easily go through it with the flow of oil.

Take a coat hanger and move it around in the bottom of the pan slowly and hope like hell it grabs. I doubt it's very strong so odds are it's still at the bottom of the pan. G/L...

Re: Soo what do you do when the magnet comes out of the magnetic drain plug?

it's not gonna be stuck to the crank or rods, they move far too quick for a magnet to hold on... The pan is aluminum, so its either gonna be stuck to your oil pump or your block.

Shit. I just had my car's oil changed last week with the ECS plug. An ECS associate here on Audizine should chime in on this.

Good news! haha, I guess as good as it can be at this point...

I decided to just leave it in there and deal with it over christmas break when I'm home and actually have the time and tools to drop my oil pan. that'll give me a chance to clear out the 140,000 miles of sludge in my pan too.

Yeah it's an ECS plug, I've had it for probably 30,000 miles and it's been a champ up until now.

Re: Soo what do you do when the magnet comes out of the magnetic drain plug?

hopefully everything goes well until christmas break. This happended to me with my bmw 525. I overtightened the drain plug and some of the thread broke off and stayed in my oil pan..i used the pen style magnet to pull that bitch out of there. Biggest mission ever for something stupid i did. This is much worse because its not your fault.

I agree. I dont know if a magnet wand will be able to pull it out either. IIRC those are actually pretty damn strong magnets that ECS puts in the plugs.

Try and fish it out, if you fail then pull the pan. You definitely can't just leave it in there.

I can't remember if there is a sensor in the bottom of the pan on a 1.8... there was one on my 2.7t. It could be stuck to that as well if there is a ferrous metal in the sensor. You can also pull the sensor for another port through which you can fish for the magnet.

    That is shitty luck.

those are high strength magnets ain't they?? now the fact that it seperated from the drain plug is a bit disappointing, and raises a question about htf it did that, but it is probably stuck to the bottom of the pan somewhere... i saw a diy a few nights ago, i think for the A8 engine, and that engines oil pan actually has 3 magnets attached to the bottom of the oil pan and they stay right where they are..

actually it was the tranny oil pan, and i believe it *was* the A8, i'll post a link if i find it..

(i'm such a noob) and now after reading the rest of the thread, i see that the pan is aluminum.. i'll hang my head quietly and hide over in the corner now..and stop posting after drinking large quantities of ale

I have one of these installed too :-(

Nice business move! I like the swoop in on a suddenly wide open market. Nothing like a panic buy! Seriously though, make it a sale item for a limited time and I bet you sell a bundle from this thread alone!

I am bummed about this thread as I am also running the ecs one and have an oil change to do next week. Hope that little magnet is still where it is supposed to be...

Re: Soo what do you do when the magnet comes out of the magnetic drain plug?

We are currently working with the customer via PM to get this resolved, it is the first time it has happened that we are aware of, it's still unfortunate and we are doing our best to take care of things.

To all current owners with the plugs, you should not be worried, in the hundreds of plugs we've sold, this is the first example of the magnet coming out.

The aluminum plug is fine, we've tested these up to 50+ ft lbs without any issue. If any drain plug gets over tightened, it risks doing damage to the threads on the pan, causing the pan to strip out. If the threads on the pan are damaged, a thread cleaner should be used.
