    Timing Belt jumped a tooth?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
If you have been reading my other thread about cylinder misfires in the tech-section this is sort of a continuation of it, but with new details.

My car was misfiring a bunch when it got warmed up, so i took it to a local shop. they replaced the coolant temp sensor and cylinder #4 coil pack. it idled just fine after that, and when it was hooked up to vagcom there were zero misfires across the board at idle.

i went out and did 2 short wot pulls. as soon as i hit 5-10 it starts misfiring a bit, and when i get up to 20psi it starts backfiring like no tomorrow, i probably torched the bumper of the car behind me lol. bunch of dark smoke out the back too. no cel popped up, so i did it again. same thing; real loud and fast backfires as soon as i reach full boost except this time i got a flashing cel. i let off and drove normally, and maybe 10-15 seconds later the cel went away completely

as of now no cel, and car still idles and drives perfect up to about 5psi.
is it possible my timing belt jumped a tooth?

LOL im gonna have to say hell no
if your belt was off a tooth you'd more than likely not be idling at all.
interference motors dont do well with timing not TDC. bent valves would be your issue.
continuous backfire and misfiring sounds like youre running rich as hell.

I posted some info in your previous thread, in the next coming weeks when i have time i'll be getting new spark plugs, and changing out my MAF and a coilpack. So hopefully that'll get her done.

Re: Timing Belt jumped a tooth?

yea i had thought the timing belt idea was way off, but worth a shot. i heard of it happen to others with similar issues.

i changed my spark plugs 500 miles ago. i installed ngk bkr7e's all gapped to .028-- i doubled checked each plug before i installed them. However, i called AWE today and told them my problems. They said i need to be using the plugs they gave me with the kit (oem plugs). i looked up the specs of the ngk 6458's (oem) and the bkr7e's and the two are way different. i really hope thats the problem. i picked up some oem plugs at the dealer just now and i will be putting them in tomorrow. hope for the best!

WRONG, you can give or take 1 tooth but you would throw a code for the cam not being timed right

well if you want to put it like that.. yah.. but the risk of valves touching will still be there.
my buddy somehow jumped 3 teeth on his 2.8 passat and didnt have valves hit.. doesnt mean you can go and mis align your belt 3 teeth off.

I'd second or third, whatever it is now, changing spark plugs. When mine start getting bad I get the same issues. Change them out and report back.

Re: Timing Belt jumped a tooth?

When i first picked my car up from the previous owner the car had a same problem as yours. PO told me he just had the plugs done 3 weeks ago. I took one out and yes they were new but bosh platnum the worst plugs ever. I had some plugs laying around from my old car 2.8 Passat, put those in went for a ride and not a single misfire.

Car would misfire as soon as it hits 5psi.

    is our engine interferance?

someone said to do the timing belt, by the book, you lock the cams, loosen the cam gears and crank the engine over by hand to get proper tension on the belt, if this is true, the pistons would kiss the valves during tightening.

can anyone chime in if that is the way the timing belt is suppose to be tightened, or is that someones idea?

Emil I ran one tank of VP unleaded 109 down at H20 and by the time I got home less than 1000 miles after putting in my BKR7E's they were toast! I am sure it is your plugs. report back tomorrow!

Re: Timing Belt jumped a tooth?

He shouldn't have to clear the codes, although clearing them does erase any fuel trim data and upon start up it'll prob run fine but if that wasn't the issue it will come back.

I've followed S4ever threads on this for awhile and he's changed plugs before. I bet the problem is going to be a coilpack or MAF, other wise it's o2 and EGT related.

And if you have a mulitmeter you can test the voltages for all the connetors for everything from o2 to coils and egt etc.... Let me know if you need the info and values i'll try to get the info off my Bentley to you.

check plug gap first....is your car low on fuel also? its somethign simple...dont overthink it.

AWE told me to buy the plugs, and put them in. that is what all their technicians do, the gap doesnt need to be adjusted on the plugs i just put in.

    just pulled the codes:

    random multiple misfire detected
    cylinder 4 misfire detected
    cylinder 5 misfire detected
