    Cost of full brake job

Hey guys... any idea what would be a decent price to replace front and rear rotors/pads from an independant audi shop (ie. not stealership). I'm toward the end of my brake life and want to know what to accrue for. Thanks.

I would guess no more than 800...

2 Hrs labor for the front
2 Hrs labor for the rear.

Re: Cost of full brake job

Depends what you want to go with. Buy the parts and trust me when I say this.........

DO THE BRAKES YOURSELF.. even if your a rookie when it comes to wrenching, doing our brakes are almost moron proof. The rear requires a special tool that can be bought on ECS tuning for about 30 bucks. youll have it for the future and save yourself a lot of money.

my neighbor got quoted 1100 for his front brakes parts and labor from BMW. We bought him some brembo rotors and hawk pads for about 275ish... and i did the brakes for him in about 20 mins.

Plenty of DIY's for this and not a lot of tools are required.

sweet... sorry for trying to give advice.

and BTW im sure everyone can find the time... if they can go take it to someone to do it (which will take longer anyways) then they have time. 2nd, this is a moron proof job that anyone could do and you dont have to be a "certified tech"

and space? ever changed a tire on the side of the road?

im sure you can even do it...........

True. I'm not a tech AND I'm a moron and I was able to pull it off no problem . Seriously though, if you can take your wheels off, you can change brake pads and rotors.

Re: Cost of full brake job

To be honest, I don't have the time to do it myself. The big difference is that I can be working while someone else is working on my car... the cost benefit still works out in my favor. At a different point in my life I would have done a job like this myself and enjoyed the process. I'm just to busy with work, when I'm not working I want to enjoy time with friends and family.

Maybe that means I'm getting older...

Either way, I'm having it done at RAI Motorsport along with some other stuff and was quoted a very reasonable price by RAYVEEDUB (the owner). I've had work done on my TT as well as the A4 with them and the do a good job and go the extra mile. I recommend him to anyone in the Baltimore/DC area for mods/tuning/service.

Thanks for all your advice, good data points for me.

I totally agree with you there bud. I used to DIY everything I could, but once I graduated school and now making a lil bit of money...Id rather have someone else deal with it. I understand it benefits to work on your car to be fully aware of how everything works
But Ive also had times where the DIYs take 2-3X longer than it should, due to lack of tools or certain misc things, and really, I want to enjoy my time off work and not spend it wrenching a car all day long.

If you have the time and the passion to DIY, then I give you all my respect.

Yeah DIY. You get a good look at how your car is being treated from another point of view. Meaning you see the wear and tear you actually put on the beast when you are in MD traffic. Plus, i trust myself more than anybody and cars are a hobby.

I guess a lot of people on here are trying to jumpstart the economy 1 stealership at a time with the crazy $800-1,100 brake jobs.

Re: Cost of full brake job

Does anyone have a link to a rotor/pad DIY?? I have no idea what this special tool is that is required for the rear. Also, is a brake fluid flush required when only replacing the rotors and pads? This was in my shop quote.

I'm sure it's pretty easy but it's still nice to have pics and specs to work with.

This is exactly how 99% of proficient shade tree mechanics get started... young and without money, so you just do it yourself, make mistakes, and learn along the way.

That's how and why I learned, and it has saved me SO much money over the years. I dont think I would own an Audi if I couldnt do all the labor myself. I even make decent money now too, but $800 for brakes, $800 for a TB install, etc will burn through money really quickly.

Plus, its fun. I like to tinker on stuff, especially cars and motorcycles.

the tool used for the back is pretty much the same thing as the front except it also screws the piston in as it pushes it, you can rent it for free at the parts store and a fluid flush should always be done after any pad relacement
