How to tell if you have turbo failure?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well went to the exhaust shop today to weld up where there were clamps and they told me that my car had some rattling sound coming down the downpipe, that it could be from the turbo. So is there any way to tell if there is any problem with my gt2871r. I will post up a sound clip or something for you guys to listen to. Any suggestion or comments would be great.

just take the intake pipe off and see if the shaft has any play in it. most turbos sound like a dentist drill when they are on the way out and the sound normally gets worse as time goes on. a "rattle" could be anything.

Yea it definitely does not sound like a "dentist drill", I guess it when I rev it up and like rpm come down is when you will hear the most. But ill doing to do what you told, just see if the shaft wiggles right?

It's likely the wastegate assembly rattling.. That's what mine was like before I changed the turbo.

Is there any way to check that without taking the whole thing apart.

I had a rattle too and it was a heatshield, that's probably what it is. and you could only really hear it when the revs dropped

You should get one from Blink Tek Design, check em out at www.blinktekdesign.com

Otherwise, rattles can be a number of things, you may have play in the turbo, could be metal klinking together elsewhere in the car, have you personally scoped the sound out?

i have the blinktek shield and love it. my commute to work is 45min to 1.5hrs depending on traffic. its a mix of stop and go and 80+. when i get home the EM/Turbo are hot as balls (not glowing), and the filter is still ambient. the shield turns your HAI into a CAI.

Sadly, no there isn't.. You need to take the downpipe off of the turbo..
Basically what happens is the flap that opens/closes the gate gets loose (like in my case) will break off and you will not be able to produce any boost.
When I was researching this, I saw that it was fairly common with K03's..
