Tapping sound this morning.....

This morning it was 24 degrees out when I started the car and I noticed a tapping sound comming from the motor. Im guessing that it is the lifters getting going but I just wanted to see if there is something else that I should be worried about. The sound went away by the time I got to work (35 min drive). Oil level is good. This is the first winter I have had this S4 and I cant remember ever hearing it from the other two. Anything big I should worry about?

Lifters will sound alot louder in the colder weather.

Just like my old DSM, faint in the summer, firecraker in the winter.

Yup, as long as your still up for it. 5:30 right? Did you say you did or didnt have a compressor that I can use at your place this weekend? I can bring mine if not.

Like other have said, thats pretty normal. What weight and brand oil are you running?

its normal, my uncles 4000 with the 5 cyl was really bad in the winter. Sounded like some one with a small hammer banging on the valve covers.

Try a different weight oil/different brand to see if that helps the noise.

I also began to hear a tapping early this week, when it was roughly 40 degrees.

What oil weight is recommended?

I think I have 5-10 mobil one in there now. I would have to look at the case when I get home though to be sure. I have put about 2k miles on it since the last oil change.
