A4 Engine Noisy & Horrible Vibration

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
For a couple of months now, I have noticed that my 2005.5 A4 has been loud at idle and while driving. In addition, I can sit a glass of water on my dash and it is vibrating like an earthquake just hit in Cali. I brought it into the dealership and they said it was normal. I opened my hood and took my turbo cover off and it sounded like a diesel engine under the hood. I know Audi's should not sound like this. I have about 52K miles on my vehicle. Does anyone know what the cause of this problem may be? Bad coil pack? Something to do with the exhaust? Something rubbing in the engine somewhere? Any help would be excellent. I plan on going back to the dealership tonight and have them take another look at it...

the only thing i can think of the bad vibration at idle is bad motor mounts. And ive also heard that some cars sound loud from under the hood but im not sure about that part.

see if they have any other b7's in the lot, and put them up side by side. one should be noisy and have lots of vibrations, one should not. let them know that it wasn't like this a couple of months ago.

motor mounts... and the diesel engine sound is normal actually because of FSI making it sound like a diesel at idle.

Re: A4 Engine Noisy & Horrible Vibration

It is much louder than a couple of months ago. When I first purchased the car, you could barely tell it was on. Now, I can go inside my house and hear it outside in the driveway. I cannot imagine that that is "normal" for a $36K vehicle.

welcome to the 2.0t engine. its noisy, vibrating, and and unrefined. but man does it put down torque when you get into it! some cars are worse than others. maybe have a scheduled service done early?

Re: A4 Engine Noisy & Horrible Vibration

on 05.5-06 the sound of a disel engine is quite normal. My neighbor who works on old Benz was shocked to hear it sound like that, needless to say after taking car to the dealer it still made that sound.

If it's making a loud sound while driving, than that is another issue. It's hard to conclude anything without hearing in person, I would also imagine if something was wrong dealer would want to change something to make money.

    Post a sound clip.

It vibrates worse when it is in park or I am not moving. When I am driving I don't really notice the vibrations...

Loud "clicking" could also be a leak or even a hair line fracture in the exhaust manifold/turbo exhaust housing.

We need to file a complaint with Audi north America and not through dealerships as this is totally unacceptable we all need to complain colaboratively because the newer A4 does not have this problem.

I have attached a clip of my engine. Mind you, this was at about 6 inches away from the engine, but you will get an idea of the pitch and sound it is making. The clip is from starting the engine and running for about 20 seconds.

Oh jesus, here we go. Its normal and thats all there is to it. Its a 4 cylinder and thats how 4 cylinders are. That's why they offer the V6, and thats probably why BMW and Mercedes don't even offer a 4 cylinder (here in the US anyway). It's also Audi's first production FSI engine, and the new A4 is more refined because its, well, newer.

If that's with the hood open, i don't think that sounds very bad. Its a little louder than mine, but my VR6 sounded about the same.

Its the FSI and get used to it thats the way it is for the earlier years i believe. The later years have a slightly different fueling system and as a result it sounds a bit different and has different characteristics.

i had the excessive vibrations at idle on my car too, and i took it in and some valve/flap thing was broken/stuck so they had to replace it. It was still under warranty (40k) and now it's all better.

Okay, so you all say this is normal? But why in the hell does my steering wheel vibrate like it is going to fall off? Is this normal too? If it is, I will never buy another Audi again.

Mine sounds the same as your clip. Everyone that hears it remarks on it. Sounds just like a damn noisy diesel. I have nothing to compare it to, but plan to bring to dealer at some point to at least try and hear another one and see if they all sound the same.
