I get this whinning nosie when I drive in my car. If I accelerate hard, it doesnt do it, lets say from 1st gear. If i start slowly I get this whinning. Its independant from the engine, or from the tranny in the way that I could be in gear or not and it doesnt affect it.

    What can it be?

Its not constant and it's not coming from the back, its coming from the front. It really isnt constant.

    Eh?

    Re: Whinning noise

I have the same noise. It started a month ago. I have yet to find out what's wrong with my car. It happens in 1st and 2nd gears and sounds like it's from the engine bay.

    Re: Whinning noise

I have this same issue, at first I thought my turbo was going out but that made no sense. If the noise is normal then great, if not something it broken and i'll just wait for the check engine light before I start to give a shit.

    Re: Whinning noise

No cone filter and as autumn and fitch303 said, it's also only in first and second even tough it doesn't seem like it's related to the tranny since I could be in gear or not and it does it anyway, I think it has to do with speed.

    Re: Whinning noise

is it a whining/grinding noise when your in gear that mean your gear is chipped.. as in like a piece cracked off.. if it is a higher pitch whining noise your turbo might be going out.. check for leaks...

    Re: Whinning noise

No its independent. If I put it in gear or not, it doesn't change anything. I don't know if its turbo or not, I'm not chipped and the car doesnt drink oil.

    Re: Whinning noise

This is kind of dangerous, but you say its independent of the motor what if you find a hill with no one around and you coast down it with the motor off, would this noise happen? If it does its a Drive-train, suspension issue and you can lead out the motor all together and if its in neutral when you are coasting is probably not a tranny issues as well. This maybe a stupid question but you have to ask does it sound like a wind noise at all like bad weather stripping? is it in conjunction to the speed your going does it get louder?

    Re: Whinning noise

for me it happens in reverse and first gear, the noise last for a few seconds and the pitch gets higher but not at the same rate my rpms go up. Also after the car has been sitting for awhile and I start to drive in first gear I hear the faint and sudden grinding noise after the first foot or so of travel.

Mine is independent from the tranny but reading your message, I remember that I have one tranny flange seal thats leaking so I will change that as well as my tranny and diff oil next week on thursday. I spoke to some shops and they told me to not worry too much about it. If it doesnt amplify or anything nor check engines.

Well see after I change my tranny and diff oil.

Ahh yes. When I took my a4 in for an oil change the mechanic came out and said I had a front seal leak on the tranny, he did not go into detail. I plan on changing this myself because the stealership wanted 1100 to fix it plus another 700 to change my thermostat. I changed the thermostat myself. Which seal are you replacing and what is the part number?

did i miss something or NOBODY mentioned BELTS? you know they spin when your car is running, and when you start moving they can make noises. What about weather, if its cold or rainy or whatever? my buddy's jetta make all kinda noises when he broke his skid plate and water gets on belts. check that

    Re: Whinning noise

belts turn at the same rate as the engine, and the sound is independent of the engine rev.

    Re: Whinning noise

I tried it with the car turned off and it still did it...! But it only did it 15 minutes after I started the car after it got really worm it stopped. I called a local shop and they said that sometimes its normal because it kinda got cold here.

It's a flange seal, the one that the axle attaches to. It costs 20$ and is about 1 hour of labour.

    I got quoted 250$ for this;
    -Motor oil change
-Tranny oil flush and flange seal replacement
    -Rear diff. oil flush

    Price includes labour and oil.
