    Fuel Filter Cost/Repair

    Hey guys,

I have a B6 A4 1.8T. How much should a fuel filter replacement cost? I know the filter is around $20-25 bucks. Two shops have quoted me $200+

They both said it would take about 2 hours to replace. Isn't this an in-line filter. Unscrew two lines remove, replace and screw the lines back on? This shouldn't take 2 hours.

A buddy of mine has a 330ci and he said it his shop 20 minutes. Unfortunately that shop is downtown TO. I live up in Markham. Any idea where I could go up here?

    Thanks

    Sam

    Re: Fuel Filter Cost/Repair

depending on the position of the filter, I could see $200. In the B5's it's "suggested" you drop the fuel tank, remove the rusted bolt, pull down the filter and swap it. There is a plastic strap holding the filter onto the gas tank and it's wedged between the tank and the underbody panels. I just changed mine a few months ago and it was a pain, but doable.

What does Independant Tuning quote you? They're usually spot on with those things......

It definitely will not take 2 hours. From when I remember doing mine, it took about 20-30 min or so to do. I did mine at a shop on Laidlaw - that's when I had access to a lift after hours

if the shop has the proper tools it shouldn't take 2 hours and $200

Hmm, I've wondered about my fuel filter as well since it's never been replaced.

Is there a rule of thumb as to when it should be swapped? My B5 S4 has 140k on it now.

In my case it took the shop around 1 hour because the darn clamps wouldn't get off. I had tried doing it myself and was not able to get those f_k_n things off.

Opps, sorry Sammers. well, good luck anyways. YOu can do it yourself, it's just a bit messy and the clamps are a PITA to remove.

    Re: Fuel Filter Cost/Repair

I replaced my filter in 15 minutes, remove the shitty plastic gaurd opposite the rear pass tire, youll need two hose clamps for the lines , remove lines and install new filter, this is if you have access to a lift, my tuner let me use his for free, ask yours, in favour , purchase a bottle of octane booster from him to justify the use of the lift. Cheers
