Grinding Sound!?!?

so when i start my car in the morning or if its been sitting for about 5 hours or so and its the first time im starting the car it makes this LOUD grinding noise, and after about a min or two it goes away and the car drives fine...

anyone know what it is?

throwout bearing? just a guess. i know when cold a bad one will make noise. try engaging the clutch when u hear it and see if it goes away.

when's the last time belts were replaced?
early morning startup (or restarting after its been sitting awhile) can sometimes cause belts (if worn) to slip on the rollers and the pulleys get a bit noisy as well.
This sound is more of a "whiney grinding" though.
After the belt(s) warms up a bit, it seats itself properly on the rollers and the slipping stops.
Check the integrity of the belts first...
The fact that it's happening on cold start doesn't seem coincidental.

Is it RPM dependent? In other words, does the noise increase as the RPMs increase?

CRAP the timing belt. i have been driving around with that noise for about 10000 miles. I was planning on getting the belt replaced around 85k...

Grinding? you sure. Can you describe the sound a bit more. The only noise TIP drivers really complain about are when the 2ndry air injection pump is going bad it makes a noise on start up and then goes away after a while. My car does this.

yeah i ahve a tip and someone told me about that secondery air pump. It sounds like one of the fans is hitting something like a high pitch grinding sound. like ZZZZZNNGGGGGGGG LOL i cant describe it lol. Il take a video of it tomorrow and post it.

sec air pump sounds most likely... Maybe the serpentine belt tensioner? if you can rev the engine and the noise stays constant i'd bet on the sec air pump..
