    Power Steering Issue

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey, i started my car yesterday and it started WAILIN!! Turned the wheel a bit and it made more noise, so i checked the ps fluid and it was low, know its quiet, except for when i turn the wheel and it makes a low noise (not really noticeable), but drops the RPM's a little at idle, is this a sign that i need a new pump or maybe i have a small leak?

I have PS issue too. My steering wheel starts shaking when I turn it left and right in place. While driving everything is ok. What can be the cause?

Mine does the same thing, and same thing happened where fluid was low and made a horrible noise. Topped it off, but it still whines a little when I turn. I'm just waiting for it to shit the bed.

    Re: Power Steering Issue

i have always had that noise and my mechanic checked the Ps pump and fluid level was ok. However when im at a compelte stop and turn the wheel all the way to the left or right and accelerate in between like 2-15mph the steering wheel vibrates, but if i take turns going like 25+ its fine...

anyone know what that could be?

    Re: Power Steering Issue

Your PS pump is most likey on its way out.Your not supposed to hear any noises from there.

If you read the manual it says your not suppoed to crank the wheel all the way to the left or right and hold it because it could damamge the pump.

My remanufactured one does it too but only in cold weather when the car is first started. Lasts about 30 sec. My old one did it all the time and wouldn't hold fluid for more than a day

    Re: Power Steering Issue

    Hey.
I have a weird problem like you guys are having too.
I had that noise but then i topped up my fluid and it was okay but it seems to be disappearing on me. Like maybe two weeks later it was low again. I don't believe there is a leak because i would have noticed it underneath i think. anyone know what the problem may be?

    Re: Power Steering Issue

if the fluid was low enough to make noise like that, after topping the fluid you must bleed out the air. Simply turn the wheel side to side, lock to lock (avoid holding it on the stops if running) until no more bubbles appear in the resevoir. Likely have to top fluid again. Works best with the wheels in the air and the engine off to start, then start the car and repeat. Check for leaks, p/s fluid doesn't just evaporate. Unfortunately, its likely your rack is leaking. Check it out

    Re: Power Steering Issue

common problem with the B5 S4. mine only does it when cranked to the extreme left or right (I parallel park 6x a day so not using the extremes isn't an option).

if the fluid level is ok, i say just wait till it actually craps out on you.

mine does this exact same thing. its freakin loud if i have to hold it at lock to make a turn. and it does the vibration thing exactly like yours

The pump. at very low speeds or standing still the pump has to work extremely hard to push the wheels lock-to-lock since the rpms are down and it takes more force to move standing wheels than it does moving ones. My pump makes noise in the cold as well and generally when operating at a stand still.. the *only* fix is to replace the pump.

but my mechanic said that the pump was fine and the fluid level was ok... im still confused..
unless your mechanic acutaly took off the pump and dis-assembled it to look at the seals.. all he did was check for leaks, which isn't an indicator of a 100% functioning pump.
