It is recommended to change pads and rotors at the same time because they have already created thier own contact surface area over time. You can always just place pads if you want, but be prepared to have uneven wear on the pads.

There is a member on this forum board whom runs ebay rotors with absolutely no issues. I can not recall whom though. Just something to consider.

Re: Can i get away with changing break pads without resurfacing the rotors?

    Something is very wrong here.

I just bought rotors and pads for the rear of my car for less than $100...An additional $300 to resurface the rotors is robbery. Parts stores, if they even offer the service anymore, usually charge like $10-$20 per rotor to turn them. A lot of places don't even do it as the rotors become cheaper and cheaper...

New brake pads on original equipment, 84,000 mile rotors is a bit of a stretch...They might last 6 months...

You can buy new rotors and pads, good ones, for less than $300.

Also I am running rotors from Autozone on the rear without any issues so far. However I plan upgrade at some point.

just brakes offers a special for 99.95 for front and rear pads and resurface all rotors. im sure "import/exotic" audi is more expensive but definetly wont be 300 bucks just for resurface. if you have a spare vehicle, do the pads yourself, and just take off the rotors and take them to a tire shop or brake shop and have them resurface them off the car. should be even cheaper seeing as how you already have pads and wouldnt be paying for install labor.

Re: Can i get away with changing break pads without resurfacing the rotors?

yeah i just went about replacing all my rotors and pads with ebay rotors and posi-quiet pads. i did this however, because my rotors were warped, and because i wanted a bit of a step up from stock braking performance. if you're going to go with all new rotors and pads i would suggest buying them from ebay seller top_brakes they cost $250 plus shipping, and they work great. i'm sure you could just as easily get all your rotors turned and just buy pads from somewhere else, but for the price you might as well upgrade the rotors while your at it...

EDIT: nevermind, you said you already bought pads. well then it's even cheaper for those rotors without pads, $190 i believe...

Wow, 300 for turning rotors? Go to a new shop, if they are trying to rob you there, who knows what else they will "find" wrong with your car that they "have" to do...

Skokkie? as in Skokie next to Evanston IL? If so go to Phil's Inc in Evanston they have new brake rotors in stock for a whole lot less than that and you can get a set of ceramic pads while you are there too.

I just replaced my rear pads with autozone Gold pads, Front pads were still in good shape. 80% less dust with the Duralast Golds. $30 and they were in stock. The rotors were $23 in stock new. I would have replaced the rotors too but there was no grooves in them.

They usually only charge 20-40 for a pair of rotors to be resurfaced.

Around here it seems to be more like $40 a pair to have them machined plus a days wait. Considering 84k miles and cheap stock rotors are about $80 a pair. I would buy new rotors and have full thickness rotors than a pair that are close to thier wear limit.

That they aren't flat, the contact surface is warped and you get a squeek or uneven braking (pull to one side). Grooves you can tell by just running your finger on the lip of the rotor and feel for any digging in.
