Pulled The trans... clutch is out.. pictures

so if you weren't already following, I was having issues with my clutch dragging. Here are some pics of what the parts look like out. the throwout bearing looks like i needs to be replaced, everything else looks ok. I'm going to send it to southbend for them to inspect

this is really such a huge pain in the ass... nothing like having to pull the trans and clutch after only 10k....

this time around it was a huge pain... 4 bolts got stripped and one snapped in half.... it was a very frustrating day.

    Damn!

That throwout bearing died waay too early. I'm sorry to hear about this.

So, everything got sent to SB for review? What are your plans? Keep the same clutch?

my plan is to wait on southbend's feedback.... i will flip the fuck out if i put another southbend part in and it breaks again... its not like pulling a trans is easy

    we'll see what they say

the fact of the matter is that there aren't any other clutches that a lot of people have had success with. Putting any other (unproven in durability) part in there wouldn't be any better than sticking another southbend in

Yes, wait and see what SB says and make a decision from there.

I understand your stance. Its a tough position to be in but lets see what SB says first before we speculate and/or make quick knee-jerk decisions.

Well a SB part didn't break since the the TO bearing is most likely OEM.

I just removed my SB OFE HD, last weekend...it had been in for exactly 1 year, but began to slip rather easily...

My clutch disk looked simular to yours, but not as bad on the flywheel side...

On now on my 3rd clutch....

there is another bearing you can get from southbent that is all metal it doesn't have the plastic they call it a heavy duty t/o bearing..I had a high pitch whinning noise when i shifted and when I removed mine looked the same as yours, so i figured the noise was the plastic grinding on the bearing..So ask them to give that bearing instead of the oem one

that's 10k miles? Yikes.. I'd upgrade your clutch. The disc and flywheel look pretty darn rough to me (much worse than my stock one after 70k miles and running BT for 5k of that).

The pilot bearing puller I rented was the standard sized one that did not fit. But if you completely remove it (from the shaft thing) and insert one 'leg' at a time and at angle it goes in no problem

Curious to what bolts you broke off. Did you possibly over tighten them several times, I have done like 5 audi/vw clutches and never had an issue with any of them. Also its not its only like a 4 hour job, not sure why you though it was such a hassle.

one hex bolt for the CV boot shield on the driver's side stripped, the bolt for the "lollipop" connector that bolts the exhaust to the trans sheared in half and 3 of the 6 pressure plate hex bolts stripped (the pressure plate bolts were loc-tited in place though on the previous install)

and I'd love to see anyone pull this trans in 4 hours. Sure, if everything went perfect and you had a second pair of hands to help here an there, it COULD come out in 4... but drive a car in michigan for a few years and do the install yourself and see how quick it goes... and how easily the bolts come out

every shop out there will quote you 6+ hours on this job
