What is the point of the "rear fog" button?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have this button, I looked it up in the manual and it called it a rear fog. I push the button and go look.. the top portion of the taillights are lit up red. Now it just looks like my brakes are on.

What the hell is the point of this? If there is fog, I have never thought to myself, "Hmm, I'll drive backwards".

    Piss off drivers behind me??

the point is the brighter red light is to allow people to see your car in heavy fog.

i always think that if i turn it on, i'll get pulled over because it looks like there is a bulb out on the right side.

it could also be useful for sending morse code messages to people behind you

Re: What is the point of the "rear fog" button?

i use it all the time. i've had a cop pull up beside me at stop light (so my brake lights are lit up too) and told me my upper right is burned out. i explained to him it was a rear fog light and he went on his way. i fear being pulled over for it going to work b/c i leave at 5am when its dark and foggy. oh well

Re: What is the point of the "rear fog" button?

theres an easy solution for it. If you do get pulled over for it, then just tell the cop to check again and push the button back in to turn the fog light off. People have done that on this forum and gotten away without an issue.

It actually is quite helpful when you have a ton of powder stuck on the rear end because it is hot enough to keep the snow melted and at least give some clue to where your rear end is to other people. I think thats its best use..

Re: What is the point of the "rear fog" button?

It's not out, it's only supposed to be light up on one side if you want both sides to work you have to install a bulb and modify the housing to make the bulb fit in it.

Re: What is the point of the "rear fog" button?

In the US, it's either both work, or just the left hand side.

The right hand side doesn't have a bulb in all models - though lots of cars will have the wiring in place, just need to punch out the peforated tab in the cluster.

In the UK, some Audi's have both, some have just the right hand side, but the cars are pre-wired for a dual set-up.

Re: What is the point of the "rear fog" button?

the initial purpose of it is to alert oncoming drivers of your presence in fog or heavy rain. originally designed for the autobahn as regular driving lights aren't enough warning when your going 140+. both were initially illuminated but then people started thinking brake lights were on so it was switched to one bulb only. there is a link on audidiy.com to wire the rear fogs to be additional brake lights. was thinking of doing this but haven't gotten around to it.

Re: What is the point of the "rear fog" button?

It's great for scaring people, I drive in Jersey and you have no idea how many smart people decide to ride your tail, simply flash the lights & they back off as you speed away. Its also extremely helpful for everybody behind you in heavy fog/rain as you can actually be seen instead of somebody smacking into you to discover you're there

this exact situation happened to me on the way home from a party.

Moral of the story, never use it. Or mod it so both work.

In the UK, and most parts of Europe, it's illegal to drive around in non-foggy conditions, with rear foglamps on.

You'll get a £30 fixed penalty ticket here, and with good reason.

Or just simply tell them it's the rear fog lights.

There are laws to when they can be used, but in heavy snow and thick fog they are great.
