Does this turbo look bad?

So a couple days I expericened a loss of power. The turbo was making an unusual whining noise, there was tons of white smoke coming out of the exhaust . I figured it had to be a bad turbo:






Not to mention the obvious on the fins on the intake side, it has quite a bit of shaft play. I'm guessing somehow some type of bolt went through the intake sytem. I was unable to find anything. I guess it gives me a reason to slap on a K04.

I have one sitting under my toolbox at work that looks about identical. The nut broke/fell off the front of the shaft and FUBAR'd the compressor wheel.

I'd try looking in the intercooler.

yeah, i had a similar looking turbo about 2 months ago and was wondering if it could do damage with all the fragments to the engine.

The engine doesn't require the turbo to do anything at idle, or even cruise. WOT it wouldn't be happy at all.
Basically, at idle or most situations in vacuum the turbo is just there for the ride, whether or not it's pushing air is almost irrelevant.

yeah that sucks/ is wierd cause i had the same thing happen to mine

it's dangerous becasue of all the little shards that are left throughout the intake

G-pop shop is a quality rebuild center, they just took two months to even get to mine this summer. I would also look at skroll (sp) cause they might be able to make that K03 into a K04+ not totally sure what they can do with K03's.

Check your DV and DV return pipe, thats where i found the nut that came off the front of the shft

EDIT: oh and when you change your turbo, don't hesitate in replacing the oil supply line! i killed a K04 in a week by not doing this.

Good info. I called GPOP Shop. They want $350 for a rebuild plus an extra $175 to put in a compressor that is 1mm larger than the k04. I think I am going to do that. Does anyone know how the k03/k04 gpop hybrid compares to a stardard k04-015?

I didn't hear anything loud. It was making a whining noise. probably the sound of the comp wheel lathing away. I didnt put 2 and 2 together at the time.
