    First of all, i have a B6 a4 and my friend has a stage 1 2001.5 S4

yesterday me and my friend were driving down the street and we come to light where we are both next to eachother. we decide to got for it and he just kills me because i have a stock a4 3.0. as he is in front of me i decide to get behind him because we both have to turn soon. under his car, i see an orange/red glow on the street. i call him and tell him to pull over because i think his car is no fire. we pop the hood and a good amount of smoke is coming out. i look under the car and i can see a fire. the fire was on the drivers side towards the back of the engine, about 6 inches from the bottom of the car. i checked all the gauges and the temp is fine and there are no lights on. i don't know b5 s4s that well so i don't know what is there that could be on fire. i think it might just be a leaf that got cough under there but i don't know.

    Re: Turbo on fire?

Exhaust components run very hot on forced induction cars. It's not uncommon to see turbos, manifolds and downpipes glowing after a good run. Does your friend have stock downpipes or aftermarket? I've never seen stock ones glow but I guess it is possible. If it were an actual fire, it might be oil leaking on one of the above mentioned items. I'd investigate further if I were him.

I won't be a mom today and tell you that street racing is a bad idea.

    Re: Turbo on fire?

Driver's side turbo might be leaking oil if there is an actual fire on the turbo or surrounding parts. I would get up on jacks and check the turbo oil lines and make sure they are tight. There wouldn't be anything shown on the temperature gauges, those are water temps.

The fire sounds like it was external of the engine (that is the only way there could be flames, oxygen is needed to burn oil). Also, if he is leaking oil that badly he could also have a blown driver's side turbo, since a lack of oil could cause increased friction and heat.

more like at least a stage 2+ car. not 1 if he has downpipes... and yeah he might want to check his oil lines.
