is there a reason to why it stops working. i remember it working at least once since i bought my car but i never really need it since i dont do long trips. Recently trying to use it i flip the switch to turn it on and then hold the little end button while im on the gas and then let go of the button and then the gas and it doesnt hold my speed. Is there sensors or anything i can do to get this shit working before i drive 500 miles in a few weeks?

also when you are in cruise control isnt there a dash light that lights up when its on. Is that only when the speed is set or when you turn the cruise control on with that switch....???

    Re: cruise control

a light on the dash should light up when you have it turned on. I dont own a b5 so im not sure if cruise control is turned on the same way as in the b6. Take a look in the owners manual. I tried using cruise control once or twice but deemed it kind of pointless considering that people drive so erratically here that when I set it i find myself having to hit the breaks from someone not paying attention in front of me or if i really need to pass someone. I guess the only time it would be useful would be at night when theres less traffic....then again, you could fall asleep more easily. Plus, i get better gas mileage without using cruise control

I used to think that too. I know the prefacelifts don't have that, or at least I haven't seen it.

I just fixed a couple of A6 at work this week with the same issue. Both of them had fried the control module. My boss pulled one of them apart and re-soldered 4 parts of the circuit board on one and made it work. I tried the same thing on my A4 today. I have my clutch switch bypassed right now though, so even if I tried it, it wouldn't work.

Both the switch on the turn signal stalk and the control modules have been problematic over the years. I wouldn't waste my money on just buying either one as a guess. The new control module isn't cheap either. We buy used ones for $75-125, vs new $350-400.

I find my cruise a little picky to engage sometimes, but not troublesome.. I find it's typically because my speed was fluctuating a little... if I hold 'er at a steady speed for a cpl seconds, hold the 'set' button for a second, it engages.

Sorry man, I know you know HOW to turn on your cruise, what I was getting at, was the pace at which I am able to turn it on... not so much how.

    Re: cruise control

Have you taken a look at the diagnostic write ups to tell if its the module or the stalk? They're a kind of a bitch to do, but all you need is a mulitmeter and some patience.

I havn't noticed anything come up when I do get my cruise to work, but then again, I can't read anything on my info display...

When I do get my cruise to work, I drive 70-75 switch to on then hold the set button for about 2 secs, pressing slowly. Then slowly let off the gas and it'll start about 5mph lower than the speed I was going. If it doesn't work I switch off-on again and repeat. Even when it doesn't work I can usually hear some sort of vacuum clicking sound in the control module behind the glove box so I think my problem lies there. WTF did they use a vacuum system anyway?
No time to mod with so many things to fix...
