    Painting stock sport rims

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have been thinking of painting my stock sport rims for a while and now I am ready to take the jump. I havn't decided on a color though tempted by a full gloss gun metal but my car is Volcano black and it might look like the same color and blending too much. I also need to know the best way to prep them and what the best paint would be. I have a paint gun and a sand blaster at my disposal if those would help me out. If there is a good quality rattle can I can use though I am all for it haha. Any info would be appreciated.

Heres a pic if someone wants to do there photoshop magic on it... go ahead and fix the rust on the rear door while your at it.

    Re: Painting stock sport rims

thinking of going with a gold on my winter s4 rims. but you just tape off what you dont want to get paint on and im not sure of the name but its a special kind of spray paint thats made for rims. we used it on my buddys F-350s rims and its been mudding and has had a pressure washer taken to it many times and still no chips after like 2 years.

    Re: Painting stock sport rims

Where can I get the paint? I am going to take the rims off and then remove the tires so I can get all the way around the lip and do it the right way but I need to prep the surface first because it is bubbly and has some road rash. Whats a good way to do that?

Would a sand blaster be too aggressive?

    Re: Painting stock sport rims

I've seen it done with notecards in between the tire and the wheel, then taped off tire.

I used the notcard method for my stocks. No need to tape off tires.

Here is an older pic when i was still on the celebrations. I sanded them down to primer, reprimered, rattle canned, and cleared using the notecard method for masking. They turned out really nicely all things considered.

By the way, Those rims are for sale!

    Re: Painting stock sport rims

I dun dat. Two cans O' spray paint and a can o dat primer, and my shits hookd up yo'.

Seriously though, depending on how much time you devote to getting a decent finish, they can look good. I don't really care, so I didn't waste much time on them.

I have the exact same car. I've been thinking about the same thing, don't know what color though. I'm thinking gold or a gloss black to contrast the volcano black mica. IDK. Post up pics when you're done though I want to see

Hardly notice??? I think any/most B5 owner's would notice the washer resievor exposed like that. I sure would replace that before winter really hits. You have a lot of component expossed down there that can get damaged very easily IMO. Look at A&P Auto Specialties eBay store for a used one.

Good luck with painting your rims, it will really come down to the prep work you do and how well your clear coat turns out.
