    Re: I think I might be getting a BLK 2001 S4

basic list of stuff that may have to be replaced:

    upper control arms
    rear wheel bearings
    diverter valves
suspension(depending on how hard the previous owner drove it obv.)
    tierod ends
expansion tank(sometimes they leak at the edges)
turbos(make sure you check them out)
timing belt(if it hasent been replaced yet)
TBB(throttle body boot, $15 from dealer to replace with stock, $60ish if you go with samco(waste of money IMO))

check the drivers door handle on the inside, sometimes the springs break, not a huge deal, just annoying(hasent happened to me yet, knock on wood).

other than that, chip it and put an exhaust on it... i personally wouldnt waste my time with piggies unless your pullin the motor out to do the turbos... i feel like it was a waste of time... i did a pull next to another giac car that had the same exact mods, minus piggies, and we were DEAD EVEN. They will surely make a bigger difference with bigger turbos, but for stockers, F it.. i wouldnt lower it yet because its getting ready to snow, so its gonna be a pain in the ass, take it from me. i would put the money towards a chip, find a used exhaust, get some "Toyota Silver" paint from autozone, and you can refinish your wheel so they look brand new again, and call it a day. after winter is over grab some suspension, and wheels, then just drive her around... hope this helps you out..

I actually bought my S4 for *less* than my A4.. granted it was 1500 miles away in texas and has significant hail damage, is in poorer mechanical shape than my A4.. but still, it was cheaper.

S4's are known to have turbo problems which get expensive especially if you have to do the work done by someone else

Most the things listed in the first post here are maintenance items and honestly you will probably not have to replace most of that at 70k miles but in time they will need to be looked at. I would juts make sure and check it over the best you can and look at those points listed in the first post.

I would also get it checked for codes. Does it have the CEL light on? Using Vag-com to check the codes can help a lot to see if some of the engine components are working right or not - such as EGT valve, Oxygen sensors, MAF and so on.

They can get very expensive, but at same time if you beat the crap out of it and dont give it proper warm up and cool down that will help to cause problems.

I've had mine for 3 years now and this is what I've replaced:
    Tires
    air filter
had timing belt done(and everything with that)
    rear bearings
    alignment
    1 egt valve
2 front oxygen sensors (these may not have needed to be replaced but I did anyway)
Did piggies myself - I do recommend this mostly because it helps the turbo's stay cooler and this will help with longer turbo life
    710n diverter valves

the biggest expense was the timing belt, but that is a maintenance issue and would need to be done on any car. Other then that most of work done I was able to do myself and wasnt very expensive at all.

Best advice to give is check the car over good and check everything ahead of time. One thing I would ask is why they are asking 8000 for a 70k mile car. That seams cheap and could mean that there are problems with it. Was it a prior salvage car? If so make sure and check the work done to make sure it was done right and not cobbled back together. Some would say stay away from salvage cars, but mine was a salvage car and I havnt had any problems at all with mine.
