    Help! Car won't start!

As much as I love my B6 I sometimes have to try very hard not to throw my fist through the window.

I just got finished towing my car back home after it broke down today. Here's the details. Any advice would be very appreciated.

On my way home, when I attempted to accelerate the car started to hesitate similar to the way it would act if I was running out of gas. When I pulled over into a parking lot it died. I started the car again and it started just fine. When I attempted to pull forward it died again. Each time getting worse until it eventually would not start. Now it will turn over but not fully start. No warning lights, no indication of the immobilizer being activated.

For the last month or so I have noticed an odd sound. Unfortunately I have not had the money to look into it. The sound is hard to explain. It's kind of a very faint humming sound that seems to come fromt he back right of the car near the rear wheel. It is loudest when starting in the morning when it's cold or when you've driven for quite a while. At first I thought it might be an exhaust leak but not sure because the sound does not change when you rev the car. It doesn't go away or get louder. It doesn't happen all the time but it does still happen whether the car is moving or parked.

A friend of mine suggested it might be the fuel pump which seems to fit the symptoms. I'm going to look into this when I get off work but in the meantime any other suggestions or even just assurances that it is the fuel pump would be greatly appreciated.

Yes your friend is most likely correct, sounds like a failed fuel pump.

It could be a fuel pump. The fuel filter is located on the passanger side rear near the tire.

The whining is your fuel pump.

You will need a new fuel filter and a new fuel pump.

    That will fix your problems.

Thanks man. Do you know of any good way of testing this to be sure first? I don't want to drop $400 on a fuel pump/fuel filter if all along it was something smaller like an O2 sensor or something.

    Update To This Thread

My A4 is currently in the shop getting taken care of. The mechanic determined it's the fuel pump. The only thing now is that he's put 2 different fuel pumps in and the pump is still making a loud whinning noise. He's trying to find out but if anyone has any input it would be appreciated.

Could my software have anything to do with it?

make sure he is replacing the fuel filter too. if you just replace the pump but keep the old clogged filter, you'll kill the new pump in short order. fuel filters are $50-60.

    Re: Help! Car won't start!

    ^^ what he said.

I did the same mistake as you did by replacing the pump first without checking/replace the filter.

As soon as the new pump was installed, it was still making noises.
Changed to a new filter and bam everything is back...smooth.

my filter was really clogged and it killed my old pump

Thanks a ton. He just called back and said it was the filter as well. It's all getting replaced. I can't wait to get it back!

Yeah, I would've but Then I would've had to tow my car back home and still pay an $80 diagnosis fee. It was worth the extra few bucks to not have to deal with it.
