Don't do it unless you don't like seeing... which is sort of what headlights are for.

4100-4300 will give you the best visibility, and frankly anything over 5000 (which is questionable already) is total rice.

There is always somebody who's got to throw the rice out there...Granted you do get the most light from 4100-4300k but you don't loose that much in the way of output with 6k.

    Rice: 8k+

Not Rice: 6k with beautiful color cutoff (something I wish the crappy valeo were capable of)

6K top and bottom. Looks good to me.

Thanks to those of you came through with places purchase.

i have 6k fogs... LOVE them! just a light shade of blue on the ground.

I usually dont drive with fogs and headlights so there is no contrast. Fogs are just for day running lights.

cutouff has nothing to do with color. that being said, 6k isn't really rice, but you will notice less visibility in the rain (that's just how light works)

Re: Where can I get 6k D1S Bulbs?

I am aware the bulb has nothing to do with the cutoff...just trying to make the point about the whole rice thing....
Since I live in Phoenix the rain is not even a factor.

Headlights are for seeing the road.

Putting in 6K bulbs is reducing your ability to see the road intentionally in an attempt to look cool.

'Rice' is usually the term used for a modification such as this.

I had 6000k bulbs in my headlights and currently have them for my fogs. They look great, but you do sacrifice visibility. I put my stock bulbs back when my headlight bulbs went kaput. Thinking of going to 5300K which are suppose to be very white with good visibility.

By the way, I got my bulbs and ballasts for my fogs at wwwl.ultrabrightlights.com

You must not have any mods on your car then...

As a reminder the title of this post is "Where can I get 6k D1S Bulbs?"
Not "what is your opinion of 6k D1S bulbs?" or "Tell me how much you know about lumens and bulb output"

Opinions are like a**holes, everybody has got one.

I am having a hard time finding them as well. do our d1s bulbs come with the ignitor built into them? i am finding some with the ignitor built in.

    Drew,
the Phillips Ultinon 6K bulbs are almost impossible to locate. I have searched retro-fiters. HID forums, called Phillips directly called friends Japan and Europe, no luck. I have all but given up on my search, hence starting this thread. I'll let you know if I find them. Please do likewise.

Yup, and you could also post "Where to find aluminum wing for S4?" and expect nothing but links to stores where you can buy them, right?

    From the above post:

    25% Less light output

But boy will you look cool

I have several mods on my car. None of them are illegal or decrease the performance or safety of my car. In fact, I've managed to find thousands of dollars in modifications for an S4 without having to resort to any parts that would also be found on a modded Honda Civic, so I'm sure there are other things you can put your money towards here.

Look man I'm not interested in turning this into a big thing. If your intent is to educate me on the deficiencies of 6k vs 4300 great, share your knowledge, add something constructive to the conversation and leave your opinions out of it.

PS: again thank you to those of you who have stuck to the thread topic.

Fair enough, dealt with these guys before and they are legit. They carry the Phillips 6K bulbs:

EDIT: Whoops... looks like only D2S is available. Apologies.

Re: Where can I get 6k D1S Bulbs?

I have RS4 OEM 4300k units on mine, and they are spot-on.

A good friend of mine had OEM 4300k that came with his '04 B6 2,5 TDI quattro.
He "upgraded" to 6000k, and his lighting output degraded badly - it was way too blue to illuminate the road far enough for safe night driving, worse when it rained.

He found his B6 2,0 with halogens, albeit with Philips ice white bulbs gave better illumination. He has since reverted his 2,5 TDI quattro back to the original 4300k set-up.

When folk here give opinions, it's not about trying to put you down - it's about trying to be helpful. By all means, ignore their advice, hell if you wan't to go even 8000k, it's your car, and your money.

If you want to increase your lumen output, you can retain the 4300k set-up, and just get higher wattage ballasts.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

Yeah I've seen the bulbs on Ebay: 7 results all from the same vendor in Hong Kong. Not real comfortable with an international purchase. Anyone else selling them is claiming they are D1S when the are really D1r (re-based)

    The search continues.....................
